How can such an accident happen on our roads ? Do we as road users, respect the right of other road users? Most of our drivers are unaware that a pedestrian has the first right of use. If this fundamental principle is known to all drivers, no such accident can ever happen on our roads. Even if such a law does not exist, if just learn to respect people, our roads will be much safer. South Kanara is supposed to be an highly evolved society, if the state of affairs are so bad there, we can imagine state of affairs, all over the country. I had an occasion to visit USA. The vehicle stops 15 meters away from the person crossing the road, irrespective of the speed of the vehicle. If a child is seen, the vehicle would stop 20 meters away till the child crosses the road. And we do not find policemen on the road. What is our culture ? There is no honking, changing of lane at will, overtaking as we do here. Can we call ourselves a civilised society ? When are going to learn some human standards ?
