Tokyo, Nov 10 (IANS/EFE): Mazda Motor announced Friday that some of the capacity at its plant now under construction in Mexico will be devoted to producing Toyota vehicles for the US market.

The Salamanca plant in the central state of Guanajuato, expected to become operational next year, will start turning out 50,000 Toyota subcompacts annually in 2015, Mazda said in a statement.

Toyota Motor Corp. will invest "an appropriate proportion of the cost of the equipment for the production and development" of its vehicle, Mazda said.

The pact is part of efforts by Toyota, Japan's biggest automaker, to bolster its product lineup for the US market, while Mazda expects to reap gains in efficiency and profitability.

Salamanca is expected to produce some 140,000 units a year of the Mazda 2 and Mazda 3 models. The plant will employ around 3,000 people.

The Guanajuato factory will be Mazda Motor's first production facility in Latin America.

Toyota makes the Tacoma pickup truck at its sole Mexican plant, located in the northern state of Baja California.
