Beijing to Invest $16 bn on Subways


Beijing, Nov 11 (IANS): Beijing would invest 100 billion yuan (about $16 billion) over building more subways, as it aims to expand the total length of its subway networks to 660km by 2012 end, the city's vice mayor Chen Gang has said.

The announcement of increased funding plan follows 260 billion yuan of investment the city has already completed to construct subway systems in the city, Xinhua reported.

Speaking at a panel discussion with other delegates to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the vice mayor said the increase in investment would be used to construct 200 km of subway lines.
