President Launches Rs 1130 Aakash-2 Tablet

New Delhi, Nov 11 (PTI) : The advanced version of low cost tablet Aakash was launched here today by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Coming at a price tag of Rs 1,130 for students, the new version 'Aakash 2', which will be made available to students of engineering colleges and universities to begin with, is now powered by a processor running at 1 GHz, has a 512 MB, a 7 inch capacitative touch screen and a battery working for three hours of normal operations.

It has been developed under the aegis of IIT Bombay with the active support of C-DAC. Datawind is rolling out the device.

"The price is Rs 2,263 at which the government purchases the device from us. The government subsidises it by 50 per cent and it will be distributed to students at Rs 1,130," said Datawind CEO Suneet Tuli.

He said the government is also trying to encourage the state governments to chip in by subsidising it further so that the device can eventually be available to students free of cost.

The first one lakh devices will be provided to students of engineering colleges and universities and subsequently these will be distributed to others.

About 22 crore students will get the device across the country in the next five to six years. By coming Monday alone, 20,000 devices are expected to reach out to the students.

The device, which can also run on Linux operating system, do Aadhar authentication and control a robot from a distant place, said HRD Ministry officials.

Over 15,000 teachers at 250 colleges have been trained on the use of Aakash for education. It will be used for classroom teaching.

According to a statement by IIT Bombay, students will be trained to develop applications and content through team projects.

"We will especially focus on application in Indian languages. Economically disadvantaged children from rural areas will receive the same good quality education like the others," the statement said.

The first version of Aakash called Aakash 1 as launched by the government in October 2011. However, it was marked by testing problems and other specifications.

The advanced version, thereafter was sent to the Union Ministers and the state chief ministers for their feedback.

"The response from them was very good with Defence Minister A K Antony describing it as a game changer for education. The Labour Ministry wanted the device to be distributed among ITI students," said HRD Ministry officials

This is CONGRESS PLAN to loot our students. This will be a DAKOTA tablet. An ordinary laptop/tablet battery costs Rs 1500. How can this tablet be available for 1130 rs?

I suggest students not to fall prey to congress looting plan. I recommend students to invest 9000 Rs more and get a 12 inch mini laptops. It will serve your all purpose.

Congress could not provide education to poor people in 65 years. Now they want to do some show off

...Mr.Abdul Sattar, you have no idea what this TAB contains...as per the specification this TAB is not even useful to SSLC students, but Govt is giving to university students...You can get very cheap chinese TAB with good specification if u spend little more...Govt is unnecessary wasting crores of money in the name of subsidy on TAB, when there are thousands of primary school/Highschools which do not have even basic facility like toilet, playground, library etc...How we can build a house without foundation...Just check with people who used AKASH Tab whether it is worth for even Rs 1000/-..i think your comment is politically motivated not practically...

Dear students not listen to others go ahead what you get, every body give different types of comment but no body come front to help u like HRD Ministry. Rs. 1,130 is not a big amount, so by paying this amount you can practice in tablet. If it is not durable at least you will get little experience in this field.

I totaly agree with you. AADHAR CARDS made with thick paper will not suvive for 6 months. Just check ID Cards of Sri Lanka.Even though the country devasted by war,the quality is as equal of Dubai driving licence/Vehical registration cards....

What you said 100% right. Very soon one more Scam....!!!!! Aadarsh Gotala not yet finished.... Aaadhar Scam will start PLUS Aakash Tablet Scam. ( Since its tablet who will give strong anti dose...??? )

Our Indian politicians ( left, right, centre) won gold medal with world record in Corruption Olympic.

Guys, do not waste money on this cheap gadget it is waste of time and money. I bought one tablet in Dubai by paying around equ.IRs3,500 did not work battery gets flat within 30 minutes if you play Youtube videos. No way you can compare to IPad or Galaxy tab. If you want buy these two brands otherwise don't buy. This is my opinion.

Any propective buyers of Akash Tablets , please think twice !!!!
I have booked the Ubislate 7 tablet a varient of Akash by Datawind in April 2012 and even paid the price of Rs. 3000=00 in advance . They had promised to deliver the device within 15 days for those who pay in advance. But for my utter disappointment the same is NOT delivered to me till today. They are not available on thier customer care number and even the emails are not properly attended. I requested for the refund but they keep on asking me for my bank details even after furnishing it several times.
So be careful before buying or sending any advance for Akash !!!!!!!

Aadhaar Project is a completely failed project. I hope this will not go Aadhaar's way.

In Bangalore, aadhaar cards are available in the name of Nandan Nilekani, Datti Sadananda Gowda or in the name of any dignitary.

Even though TECH BRAIN Nilekani was appointed as head of Aadhaar's project it did not succeed. One of my family members got two aadhaar cards one in Mumbai and second one in Kundapura. When the finger print and eye lid scan is unique to a person how is this possible ? This shows how this project was uted by UPA Govt. Very soon Aadhaar Scam (of magnitude 10 lac crore rupees) may hit the headlines.

BETTER STUDENTS MUST WAIT FOR 1 YEAR. THEN ONLY THEY MAY GO FOR IT.

I AM SURE SO MANY COMPLAINTS WILL COME, SLOW PERFORMANCE, HANGING,TOUCH PAD PROBLEM, BATTERY PROBLEM ETC ETC.

Total Subsidy (Central State) on Aakash Tablet Scheme = Rs.2,263 * 22 Crore Students = Rs 50,000 Crores = USD 9 Billion.

As per the latest 2012 UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report, 39% of Indians are illiterate and by 2020 India will have more than half of the Global Illiterate population.

It will make sense if our government first spends USD 9 Billion to make Indians literate, than offering under grads with fancy toys like Tablet, Xbox, Iphone etc, etc……..

Looks like a Mega Scam in the making. HSBC and UBS Geneva accounts will be actively transacted in the next 05 years.

Gold mal Hai Sab Gold mal Hai !!!!!
