Mangalore, Nov 14: "As there is no proper information or awareness on child rights, those rights have been ignored. Hence, the Child Rights Protection Act of 2011 has to be given publicity so as to create awareness among the general public regarding child rights. Only if these things are followed systematically, child labour can be prevented", said child welfare committee director Asha Nayak.

She was speaking on the occasion of Child Rights Anniversary and Childline Friendship Week-2012, organized by Children Anniversary Committee, DK District and Childline Mangalore in the Chinnara Thagudana at Bejai-Kapikad.

"We speak about child rights, but we never care or react when anything against children happens. We ourselves violate the rights, hence these sort of violations get repeated. We need to remove this mentality and revolt against such violations," she added.

Speaking after the release of the banner, DK zilla panchayat vice-president Rithesh Shetty said that it is not sufficient if we celebrate the occasion once in a year. "There are lots of children being witheld from education. The government has brought into force many plans for such children. If these plans have to be implemented, such programmes need to be given high publicity," he said.

Education department deputy director Mosses Jayashekar, Prajna Counselling Centre director Hilda Rayappa, Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan planning director Shiva Prakash, programme convener, Renny D’souza, Shikshana Sampanmoola Okkuta’s Suresh Shetty, Information department vice director Rohini and Krishna Shastri Balila were present.
