Kundapur, Nov 17: "Government schools have been weakening in their existence due to peoples’ desire for English medium education. On the backdrop of the situation, wherein 20 % of government schools in the district are on the verge of closure, there is a need for providing conducive atmosphere to improve the quality of education. School teachers and school development monitoring committee (SDMC) members are the backbone of education", said Udupi district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.

He spoke after inaugurating a workshop on education held at Tallur Government Higher Primary School which was organized jointly by Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan and Indian Foundation for Arts.

He said that the government schools have been facing many problems, and in order to achieve social justice, there is a strong need of government schools and the society has the onus of safeguarding them.

"Every child should get education. The government has the motto of realizing healthy and lively society. With these objectives, the government has set aside Rs 15,071 cr for education purpose in its budget. Recruitment of teachers also takes place based on the eligibility of candidates. Though it has been proved that nowhere other than government schools provide quality education, more active participation is needed on this issue", he said.

He added that timely training is provided to teachers and SDMC members.

Byndoor MLA K Laxminarayana presided over the function. District Rajyothsava awardee teacher Ganapathy Hobalidar was felicitated during the occasion.

ZP member Ananth Movady, Tallur grama panchayath president Raghu Poojary and SDMC president Nagesh Bhandary were present on the occasion.

Byndoor zonal BEO Chandrashekar welcomed the gathering. Anupama Prakash delivered the key note address. Head Master Shankar compered the programme.
