Mangalore, Nov 24: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a talk on ‘Corporate social responsibility for persons with disability’ at KCCI hall on Friday.
Major General Ian Cardozo, chairman of Rehabilitation Council of India, Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment, Government of India was the resource person. “Disability can happen to anyone at any time. It is not a curse but it is an inspiration to fight with the system”, he said.
“Some disasters are caused by nature but some are made by the society. One such case is epitome mental retardation caused by polluted water in Nasik. In society, evil exists because of silence of good people and their tendency of living and thinking that problem is not ours. I lost my leg in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Doctor was not ready to chop my wounded leg, but I myself amputated my leg in Khukri, and I was first disabled officer in Indian army”, he said.
Ian Cardozo continued his talk by narrating the story of Douglas Bader, fighter ace of Second World War of Britain who made the Germans to panic. “Corporate sector should identify the problems and recognize the talents of disabled and make a path for them through confidence. The true nature of charity begins at the home of an individual”, he added.
Precilla Cardozo, Nigam Vasani president of KCCI, Jevan Saldana, Mohan Pai, M Ganesh Bhat were present on the occasion.
