Woman Gang-raped in Delhi, Battles for Life

New Delhi, Dec 17 (IANS): A 23-year-old woman was battling for life here Monday after a bunch of men raped her in a moving bus and threw her out on the road along with her badly beaten boyfriend, officials said.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit expressed her disgust over the incident even as police detained four suspects for the overnight crime and said they were looking for other accomplices.

While the 28-year-old boyfriend was discharged from hospital Monday morning, the young woman, whose name is being withheld, was on ventilator at the Safdarjung Hospital with life threatening injuries.

"The patient is critical," hospital spokesman S.N. Makwana told IANS.

Police said the horrific attack took place when the young couple reached Munirka in south Delhi around 9.15 p.m. Sunday after watching a movie and boarded a stationary bus to go to Dwarka.

Around five to seven men in the bus, including the driver and conductor, allegedly misbehaved with the woman. When the boyfriend intervened, he was beaten up. She was then sexually assaulted in the moving bus.

The woman's ordeal, a police officer said, lasted for 45 long minutes.

Both victims were pushed out of the bus at Mahipalpur in south Delhi after their mobile phones were snatched.

A police vehicle rushed them to hospital past midnight after being tipped off by a toll plaza patrol that a young man and a young woman were sprawled by the roadside.

Deepak Tripathi, the anguished uncle of the young man, said five to six men attacked the two.

"When my nephew tried to save the girl, he was beaten with iron rods," he said. "The girl was then gang-raped."

The young woman, who belongs to Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, was interning at a hospital here for some months. She lives in Mahavir Enclave in west Delhi.

Doctors said she had grave injuries on the stomach and intestine, and she bore signs of having been beaten with a blunt object.

Her friend hails from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh and lives in Ber Sarai in south Delhi. He had completed his B.Tech from Meerut and was preparing for civil services examination.

Delhi Police said four suspected attackers had been held and CCTV footage of the bus had been seized from a toll plaza in Gurgaon.

"We cannot divulge the name of the detained and where they were picked up," a police officer said.

Chief Minister Dikshit pledged "strict action" against the attackers.

The transport department has cancelled the license of the private bus, she said.

Education and Social Welfare Minister Kiran Walia said: "It is a shocking incident."

Mamta Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, said she was aghast. "If an incident like this can take place in a thickly populated area like Munirka, it shows the police are not alert."

Maybe u r right in saying that police here is doing its duty. But r u ok in letting any lady of ur house go out late at night despite this. R u sure such incidents might not take place here at all.The major issue here is people should learn to respect women and treat them at par which has been forgotten by all. Only then u wont have any rapes molestations pub or homestay attacks where public just standby and watch drama. Also needed is that if some wron doing is happening somewhere we need to put an effort to stop it

    Dinesh Poojary,

I live in a city where the wall of a Jewelry shop was drilled through to make hole big enough for a man to enter.

Last night, places worship were pelted with stones at more than one locations.

Girls going to school carry ready safety pins to ward off molesters in the city buses.

Worst of all, while taking a mentally retarded girl to hospital in a KSRTC bus, a man did such a shameful act with her I am ashamed to put here in words. The girl was in no state of mind to react or report. He was beaten by public to such a state that he will get convulsions even to look at even his own wife.

This all happened in Mangalore city, yes, it function under corporation now, not a town like Beltangady.

And, the police ?? Oh ! Mangalore is under Congress rule !

Dinesh Poojary You are 100% correct “from last 4 years crime rates have reduced considerably in Belthangady. Previously it was much more”. It is Just because of Vasantha Bangera Congress MLA. It was more at the time of Prabakara Bangers BJP MLA.

If laws like the shariat was in practice in india, these incidents would not have happened. For atocrities against women capital punishment should be given, only then these type barbarians wont comeup again.

IT IS REALLY A SHAMEFUL ACT. THERE IS NO RESPECT FOR HUMAN BEING IN INDIA. DAY BY DAY RAPES AND MURDERS ARE INCREASING AND NO ONE IS TAKING STRICT ACTION ON THESE ISSUES. THERE IS NO SECURITY FOR WOMEN. THERE IS NO LAW AND ORDER FOR THESE CULPRITS TO PUNISH. FEW MONTHS/DAY THEY WILL BE IN JAIL AND LATER THEY ROAM LIKE A FREE BIRD AND DO THE SAME THING OR ASK SOMEONE TO DO TO TAKE THE REVENGE. OUR GOVERNMENT PEOPLE ARE SPENDING TIME IN PARLIAMENT BLAMING OPPOSITE PARTIES , NO STRICT LAW NOR ACTION IS TAKEN SO FAR BY ANY GOVERNMENT IN ANY STATE. . WE NEED TO HAVE A STRICT LAW FOR HARASSING THE FEMALES, FOR RAPES AND MURDERS. NO CULPRITS SHOULD LEAVE TO ROAM SO EASILY. SOME WHERE TALKING ABOUT DRESS CODE IS THE MAIN REASON FOR RAPE. IT IS NOT DRESS CODE, IT IS A HUNGER AND DIRTY EVIL EYES OF HUMAN BEING WHO IS SPOILING THE SOCIETY. THEY DON'T WANT TO WORK AND LIVE PEACEFUL AND DECENT LIFE, WILL NOT ALLOW OTHERS ALSO TO LIVE DECENTLY. RAPE IS BECAME SO COMMON IN INDIA. BECAUSE NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN IT SERIOUSLY TO PUNISH THE CULPRITS. HANG THEM IN PUBLIC. LET THEM KNOW THE PAIN.

It is very unfortunate this incident happened.
Recently many cases of such kind are frequently reported all over the country.
How can anyone behave such cruel.
Some measures must be taken. A man need to respect every woman.
Also it is saddening to read the comments posted by the people. Instead of writing about the incident, each one is writing about politics and other things. This is the reason why these incidents still happen and why were still not improved

    Now don't change your tune.

I will give you one example: Why do you lock your house in the night time? To protect you and your family from robbers right? Why do HOYSALA vehicles do a round up in Mangalore city during nigh time? Again to give security for the people correct? What if robbers are more in city? Police and you both will be more vigilant correct?

In Belthangady rape took place in a forest area. Now see this incident, inside a bus where people like you and me are traveling and in open public this tragedy has occurred. Can you just imagine the situation now? Are you hesitant to travel to udupi from mangalore in bus during night time ? No right? Exactly this is the difference between Karnataka and Delhi.. Now see any KSRTC or private bus, how many women are safely traveling in the night..

Terrorists have attacked Mumbai in 2008. Do you still blame the mentality of terrorist? Don't you blame our security system? Here comes the point sister. It is Govt's job to ensure security for the people.

Few months back I was returning from Mumbai to Bangalore. Train reached bangalore very late in the night. I took auto from Yeshwanthpur Railway station to my house in Vijayanagar. I got down from auto and was walking towards my house. It was around 12 mid night. As I was walking, a police jeep came and stopped me. They started questioning where am I coming from? I said from Mumbai. They told me to show train ticket. I presented. They asked my ID proof. I gave my DL. After few more questions they let me off.

Why police are doing this? To keep people safe in the city. This is missing in Delhi. It is the Delhi Govt's job to enhance security system. Every week a rape case is reported from Delhi region. But Govt is busy in looting and sleeping.

    Dinesh Poojary,

If some Congress party workers goes to Sowmya's parents and says that the tragedy happened with their daughter because BJP is incapable of ruling the state, will they believe it ? Similarly, Congress has nothing to do with Delhi people's mentality. People are made up of you and me and we ignore one case close home and concentrate more one what is happening far away. Let us get together and stone the culprits irrelevant of political hold, whole India (not only Bangalore) will be a pleasant place to live. Dixit or Shettar are representatives of law-makers - with proper opposition party in the functioning. Me and you are those elected them-can't deny it.

Rape, theft or any crime does not less or more subject to political affiliation.

    Lydia,

In Delhi rape cases are very frequent. Every week one or two will be there. You must remember, SOWMYA VISHWANATH, a MEDIA REPORTER was raped and killed in Delhi couple years ago.

I am not saying BJP rule Karnataka is SAFEST in the world. But compared to DELHI, NOIDA, UP. MUMBAI etc etc. Karnataka is 100 times better.

    SHAME . SHAME. SHAME.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN ITALIAN LED CONGRESS RULE.

RECENTLY MMS WAS ROARING IN GUJARATH THAT GUJARATH IS NOT SAE TO LIVE UNDER THE SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI.

BABA/BABY USED TO TELL THERE IS NO SAFETY FOR A WOMAN IN GUJARATH.

BUT IN DELHI GANG RAPES, MOLESTATION ARE HAPPENNING UNDER THE NOSE OF ITALIAN, MMS,BABA,DIGGY,SIBBU,CHIDU,SHIELAKI JAWANI ETC...

    JOSEPH GONSLAVES SHOULD GIVE ANSWER.

NOW ITALIAN LED CONGRESS MINISTERS SAYS LIKE THIS :

1.GANGRAPE WAS HAPPENNED AFTER CONSENT FROM THE GIRL.

    2. WHY BOY SHOULD GO ALONGWITH A GIRL IN DELHI BUS.

    3. IT IS PART OF A LIFE . WHAT IS WRONG IN THAT.

    4. THESE ARE COMMON IN DELHI , WHY WE SHOULD BREAK OUR HEAD IN SUCH THING.

    5. WE SHOULD GIVE AWARD TO THOSE WHO GANG RAPED ON SINGLE GIRL.

That is the reason BJP ruled NAMMA BENGALURU is the best city to live in India. Also MANGALURU, MYSURU, HUBLI, GULBARGA are the best cities to live. Whole Karnataka is safe.

People who are blaming Mangalore, should live in Delhi for 1 month and then comment here. Jossey must try delhi once.

Yesterday a man fired at hotel waiter, today gang rape. Daily one or other crimes are being reported from Delhi. When the national capital is like this, think about other cities in India. Time to give z category securities for all women of Delhi.

Home minister Shinde is spending his time to blame BJP whole day and night. He should resign immediately if he can't improve the situation. Under congress rule Delhi has become TALIBAAN.
