New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS): Following street protests here provoked by the gang-rape of a woman, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Saturday appealed to agitators to join hands with the government to check crimes against women.

"We also feel the disquiet being expressed by the protesting youth. Let us move together to find a way to solutions for this problem," Khurshid told reporters on the sidelines of an event in the capital.

"There is no question of sidetracking (rape incident)...we shouldn't disrupt daily life for one person's pain. Let us move together to find long term solutions to such a serious problem," Khurshid said.

Saying the government was seized of the gravity of the issue, Khurshid said that the urgency of the moment was action to restore people's confidence and give relief to the hurt.

"We must move fast to soothe the pain that people are going through, otherwise people will feel more aggrieved," said the minister.

Replying to another question Khurshid said he was absolutely against street trials in such cases and against "media street trials".

"There has to be better provision for quicker justice, there is no substitute for this. We absolutely cannot have street trials," said the minister.
