Fury over Rape Turns India Gate into Battle Zone

Fury over Rape Turns India Gate into Battle Zone

New Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS): The heart of the Indian capital turned into a battle zone Sunday as thousands massed to denounce the brutal gang-rape of a young woman, with clashes between police and protesters leaving many injured.

Outnumbered police and paramilitary personnel fired umpteen tear gas shells and repeatedly used batons to break up emotionally charged crowds screaming "We want justice!" and hurling stones and water bottles.

By early evening, three huge bonfires had been lit near India Gate, a World War I monument whose lawns have been besieged by thousands since a 23-year-old was raped in a moving bus, leaving her battling for life.

The more frenzied ones uprooted wooden barricades erected for the Jan 26 Republic Day crowd control and set them on fire.

Witnesses said several people, including security personnel, were injured.

But even as a section of the vast crowd indulged in violence, breaking police barricades and overturning a handful of vehicles, the mass of young men and women remained peaceful.

Many of them held hand-written posters and waved Indian flags. Some gave fiery speeches.

Unlike Saturday's equally massive protests, many middle-aged also poured in Sunday, urging the government to amend laws so that rapists get heavier punishment.

The violence subsided after some 90 minutes of running battles during which crowds charged at security forces around India Gate and retreated in the face of tear gas and batons.

"We hope these protests wake up the government," said Rakesh Kumar, a businessman in south Delhi who was at the site with his wife and two young daughters.

The younger protesters were more militant and angry.

Pallavi, a 25-year-old working for a multinational, told IANS: "The government is sleeping... The law against rape must be stronger and should be implemented properly."

Delhi University student Hemant said the protests would continue "until we are assured that girls are safe in Delhi".

The foggy and chilly Sunday began on a quiet note at the protest venue, with only a small group who had spent the night present. By early morning, crowds began to pour in, shouting slogans.

The initials slogans, mainly condemning the Dec 16 rape, later turned anti-police.

Having barricaded all the roads leading to the Rashtrapati Bhavan and government offices close by, security forces sprayed water and fired tear gas at the crowds demanding death to the rapists.

Prohibitory orders banning the assembly of five or more people were clamped in parts of the city centre in a bid to prevent the demonstrators from marching to the presidential palace or Prime Minister's Office.

The continuing protests over the rape -- the victim is in critical condition at the Safdarjung Hospital -- found their echo in the political circles.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday promised a group of young people that speedy action would be taken against the accused and they would also be charged with attempt to murder.

This was her second meeting with some of the protesters.

A huge crowd had camped out outside her 10 Janpath residence Saturday night. To the surprise of many, she came out past midnight, sat with them and spoke for some 20 minutes.

The day's protests also drew political activists. But most appeared to be people with no particular affiliation.

Amid all this, yoga guru Ramdev reached the Jantar Mantar protest site also in the city centre standing atop a bus. Later, many of his supporters made their way to India Gate shouting slogans.

Earlier, police evicted protesters from near India Gate but succeeded only partially.

Many young men and women were grabbed and forcibly led away towards parked buses. But many slipped through.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit appealed for calm but said she did not approve of police action against the young.

Authorities shut eight Delhi Metro stations but that seemed to have no impact on the crowds.

The police apprehending the culprits within a short time is highly appreciated. But ‎resorting to lathi charge on the peaceful protestors is a condemnable act. At least in this ‎demonstration, where the majority are girls, the police should have shown some restraint. They shouldn't have exhibited their ‎usual brutality. They shouldn’t have gone beyond water and teargas. And it is the result ‎of the government’s highhandedness in dealing with the situation. Time is running out. ‎The government and the opposition must sit together and bring out an immediate solution ‎to deal severely with rapists. ‎

Dear All , I had predicted such incidents will happen and will continue to happen, most of the time the right Education and common sense matters, there is a major imbalance in Ratio of male and female population especially in India.
Female child was looked down upon mostly by Women folks themselves , many were killed, murdered after birth and rest were aborted after knowing the sex this is one part, and suddenly we started aping the west in all our outlooks also the law were changed so women started getting empowered prematurely by IPC 498A which is being widely misused and law on prostitution becoming more stricter! all these are driving some men to the wall and they are becoming women haters as for men sex is not a option, People think just by aping the west in the laws all will work out right, IT will not and never be in near future at least in India, give enough time to change the mindset of people, this kind of violence will continue in such forms, when men are denied justice especially during marital disharmony and women going against their husbands for silly reasons and getting their " revenge", I appreciate the empowering of women but just because it is women she cannot do anything she pleases , which will boomerang in such incidents , let there be equal justice to everyone without gender inequality , IF people with sense will not look into these matters the situation will only worsen as laws like 498A takes away the hope of people and will make them vengeful , and then always the innocent suffer.
No one seems to see the long time repercussions in Breaking of a family unit whole country stands on family structure when there is division within the family then whole nation breaks down! please be aware and do not blindly support a woman especially in a marital conflict try your best to put back the families , which will make a healthier nation.

    Dear Dina,

Thank you for your response to my comment and I do agree with you.

The reason why I commented because it was most pitiful to read We Christians were seeking for a death penalty just like the Jews & Pharisees for Jesus which made me very much upset. Because our God is a Merciful one. In our country, there are law makers and there are certain laws and judges to give the verdict and punish them accordingly. We the ordinary citizens and as Christians are nobody to judge and insist them to hang. The law will take its own course. It's better and nice to read some healthy comments but not hatred. But yes. Peaceful protest turned into a violent protest. That’s very sad to see.I have no more comments but I urge all the Christian brothers and sisters that whenever you all come together please remember to pray for our nation, our politicians and every citizen of our beautiful country to receive divine wisdom, divine mercy, divine grace and divine blessings . Prayers can change everything. We, believers believe in prayers. So I hope and pray that we all will have a peaceful election and a good government in the coming New 2013 year.

May God bless India and the Indians. Shalom.

    Dear Godfrey,
I agree with all that you have said. I Am also born again christian. My message to all is to forgive. But there is something more we have to understand here. God has given us judges & doctors to help us. A righteous anger is not a sin. You gave instances in bible where Jesus was angry when people were going against the law. All will be justified when it their time to go. But there is something we have to do is to bring awareness among the people to show human respect to the creation of God. This is what the people are trying to do. There might be lapses here & there during the protest. So when we comment on something we have to study case by case. So let us keep praying for peace & justice.

Delhi is becoming unsecured capital over years under the Congress Rule. Beating of Women & Children in Baba Ramdev Rally, Firing Tear Gas-Water Fire-Lathicharge on silent protestors in rapecase, etc. Besides several scames, Congress has misreably failed to give good governance in Capital city itself. Our intelligents here had been blaming only Karnataka, & now hectically trying to bat on behalf of Congress. Some statements as one of accused was insane, only adds fuel to public protests. Had these protests not carried out, Congress would definetly try to hush up the case like past incidents. Even Delhi High Court has severely condemend Delhi Govt. steps in this regard.

Win by silence not by voilence .... Judgment will be passed on its own as per law .we can silently protest to speed it up not by another voilence... 895 rape cases are pending to our surpise...every citizen was busy in his/her own world. only recent rape case has come to the notice from the media and blown out of proportion.. Dear All, (Continued)

Look at Stain brother’s murder case in Orissa. Mother had forgiven the culprit, he had repented and atoned for his crime. Due to forgiveness of that mother, his life was spared & he could accept Christ as His personal Savior and he is now living for Christ. What a great testimony? So, We have no right to take somebody’s life. Because Life was given by Him, for Him and He will take on His own time. So we are nobody to judge them and ask for the punishment. Law will take its own course. I know It’s hard but possible by His grace and mercy.

Dear All, I’m sorry, but I did not mean to upset you. But I was also there to console you. Being a Born Again Christian, I celebrate Christmas everyday but I wish and pray that you will all have a blessed, a joyful & a prosperous New 2013 Year. God bless You All.

    Dear all, (Continued)

We are stepping into the New 2013 year. But by seeing the behavior of our citizens, I feel we are still in the ……….? I would have appreciated if people had sat at one place & peacefully protested for it but instead of that they were moving like rioters. We have to learn from Japanese.
5.There are 3 security (including police) persons per every VIP’s in Delhi & only 1 police per 700 Delhites. What a shame to know about this. Who’s responsible is to implement the security? Whether the DG or CM? Only God knows.
6.Finally, the accused been caught, they have repented their sins and begged themselves to hang them. But my question Especially with our Christian brothers & Sisters, who are the followers of Christ and going to celebrate Christmas tomorrow, What message can you take to the world? Is it right to judge them and ask them to punish by hanging? Do you still follow Moses’ Law or likes to follow Jesus command? He was too killed though He was innocent. What did Jesus said about forgiveness and especially on the cross before his death? ““Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34) Forgiving others is not a matter of choice, it is a direct command from our Lord, which some seem to prefer to ignore or rationalize away. Remember, forgiveness” on others in a display of how “gracious you are”. So please brothers and sisters, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her (them)”(John 8:7) “ For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”( Matthew 6:14) "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37) We, many are guilty and sinful either one way or other way. Let us accept the fact & pray for those culprits and pray for the politicians and every citizen of our Country so that these incidents do not occur again. Look at the Stain brother’s murder case.

    Dear all,

Since the day of this tragic incident, I have been reading and watching this case very keenly and seriously. I am terribly shocked and felt sorry for the victim. I have two daughters too and it made me to think 100 times about their future & the security of their life. But I know my Redeemer Lives and He will take care of them. But some of yours comments made me write and share with you all.

1.The incident was a tragic one & I condemn it and I pray and wish that the victim will get well soon and have a normal and a blessed life. May God heal and bless her.
2.Single rape incident in Delhi made huge impact all over the country, what about the huge rape incidents that happened in the past and been happening in J&K & in Gujarat, with Dalit’s in Bihar, Rajasthan, U.P. , Bangalore & recent in Mangalore a 17 year old college girl Soujanya’s barbaric gang rape and murder case and various other parts of our nation. No one protested for it, either they are interested about it. So sad. God forgive them.
3.Sometimes we have to take blame on our own children in some cases too. I have seen girls behaving in the public places. Anyway It’s time to educate our children in the school, parents to show their love & counsel them at home and pray for them and put some God fear in their hearts so that they cannot be lost or fall in to prey.
4.About the protest which we have been watching on the tele. What kind of protest is this? It’s a question I want to ask with the students and the two smaller parties like Kejariwala’s Aam Aadmi….. and Ramdev’s Jantar Mantar, was it a silence protest or a violence protest? Felt shame on the impatient youth, senseless media and also feminist organization for exaggerating this issue and causing havoc in the public. Properties been damaged, police constables been badly wounded. Political parties wants to politicize the issue. It was sick to see some people shouting for death punishment. Where we are heading from here. We are steppin

The demands from feminists and women right groups are equally brutal , vested and midieval nature . Shouting for death punishments and marital rape clause , so that wives can hang or castrate their own husbands . This wave is very dangerous . .....//......What happened with girl is very sad but protest should be completely non violent . What type of PROTEST this? Is it SILENCE PROTEST or VIOLENCE PROTEST ?? How can protesters achieve something with violence obviously police should prevent them from the violence and damage of public properties. Ofcourse citizens should protest against the rapists and for the strong law (death penalty) against the rapists. People are talking about security for the VIPs (Politicians/Ministers). The total members of Parliament are 802 ofcourse they are getting the securities but how can government give the security for a single person of India for the total population of 1,220,200,000. (1.2 billion) just think and imagine. First of all our constitution/IPC are very weak and takes decades to get the justice/punishments comparatively other countries. First of all citizens of India raise the voice against amendment of constitution/IPC for strong law for rapist, murders etc. and immediate justice/punishment not decades. People are sleeping from the decades but just now woke up, second thing Opposition party leader demanding emergency parliament session for this issue. UPA government brings this bill in the parliament since 2006 but till now not passed, but are these political parties (especially opposition parties) are sleeping from 2006. Supreme Court has banned the tinted glass in the vehicle but this bus is having (which raped in the bus) still tinted glasses. Are the citizens of Delhi are sleeping till something happen??? I hope readers can understand the fact.

I'll check how many of you justified the attacks on women in the name of culture.

The rapists have gone one step ahead from you in the attack that's all. But whats great about Delhi is that each and every person has opposed the atrocity, unlike what certain men in Karnataka did !

Can't ourhome minister say a few words from his heart rather than reading a statement made by his PA? Is it too much for PM or President to come out, meet the protesters and say a few assuring things? It would have increased their stature.
I am sure Obama would have directly met the protesters if such incident happened in US.

I think Sonia Gandhi will put famous Congress party into dust bin if she doesn't care about Indians. Two days back,Italian Govt could take its sailors out from Cochin Jail for X'mas celebration in Italy.Whole Kerala knows Soniyaji played crucial role in this case.If sailors don't return as promised after x'mas celebration,I write in my blood that Congress will never ever come in Kerala again till Soniyaji in Congress ! Now Gang Rape case in Indian capital and Govt was offering condolence message to Philippine storm victims instead of talking about brutal rape ! Finally, peaceful protesters were beaten like anything by police..Soniyaji is smiling..!

it so sad that the victim is still battalling for life only hope she be perfectly fine. first of all Indian police must sober themselves, learn to handle the protestors. politicians must realize they are voted to see and make laws for the safety of citizens an not see their safety.
    1. once the culprit, who is an animal then get him to the spot where the rape somone and shot him he has no right to live.
    2. educate the kids in school, introduce human values and not some usefulness history or life of a political person.
    3. people in society must teach these rouges a lesson then hand over them to the police.
no where is ABVP now do they protest only when there is hidden agenda. is ICYM a youth movement meant to voice these concerns or they fight inside the church. never heard anything from this movement.

This is not the way to protest, when govt promissed that they are going take action, then give them some time. By taking law into your hands you are creating more problem.we all against what happened to poor lady she might be any bodies daughter or sister she must get justice. But not this way.

One innocent victim is battling for life and thousands of protesters have turned the capital city into a battle zone.6 fools have committed the crime, 6000 fools are indulged in violence. .Isn't Mr. Katju right in his statement?
Thappu madidavarige shikshe aagale Beku. Shikshe sikke siguthade. Then why all this Halla Gulla. It takes its own time.Once they are caught a lot of information leaks out. This will help a lot. But if you finish them at once the story ends.So have some patience and watch the results.
My que. to some of the commentators - WHO ARE THESE SIX INVOLVED IN THE CRIME?
    Italians, Congi's, Christians, muslims,Sikhs,Zoroastrians?
Who taught them this heinous culture?
If you have any concern over the victim just remain calm and pray for her speedy recovery.
Let there be peace during this festive season and look forward for better India 2013.

All of you who are accusing Congress for the mess, please note that a change or modification in existing law or enacting a new one is not one-man-act but must be agreed by ruling as well as opposite party. Please have some understanding about functioning before pointing your guns.

Secondly, the people are instigated much more than required here. Silent protest does not mean pushing the barricades or crossing permitted limits. The police have their own guidelines to follow at the same save themselves from attacking public.

I would have saluted if people had sat at one place and refused to move instead of moving like rioters.

Eyes to open our rulers Rape itself is a heinous inhuman crime and treated same as a murder. Should be given fast verdict with capital punishment as it's in USA and middle east countries. Recently a 28 year old drunken Police officer (Michael Pena) who raped a girl at his gun point found guilty by the court & sentenced to 75 years jail term.

If this protest was done by Anna Hazaare, the congress chiddu, doggy, tiwari, italian, pershian, moily etc etc would have fired gun against him saying it is KESARI protest.

Thank god now common people are protesting. Congress now must understand their duties and responsibilities.

In Future common people like these should protest demanding implementation of Lokpall bill.
