Fast Seeking Death to Rapists Enters 10th Day

New Delhi, Jan 2 (IANS): A hunger strike by a man demanding death sentence for those who gang-raped a young woman here entered the 10th day Wednesday with no sign of the protests at the site abating.

Rajesh Gangwar from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh began his fast 10 days ago on a road near the Jantar Mantar observatory in the heart of the capital. Babu Singh, from Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh, is on day five of his fast.

Both men spent another night at the protest site in biting cold -- even as the temperature dipped to 4.8 degree Celsius early Wednesday.

They are demanding immediate death sentences for the six behind the gruesome gang-rape of the physiotherapy student who died in Singapore Dec 29. All six are in Tihar Jail.

Gangwar and Babu Singh were examined by N.K. Bhatia, medical director of NGO Mission Jan Jagriti who said their vital parameters were normal.

Scores of people meanwhile continued their protests at the site demanding stricter legislation to end increasing crime against women in India and to seek early justice for the Delhi gang-rape victim.

A small group spent the night at the spot, but the crowds increased during the day. Most demonstrators are college students.

The protest spot -- with candles burning in memory of the Delhi girl -- is guarded by a large number of police and paramilitary personnel. Volunteers distributed hot milk to the protesters.
