Mangalore, Jan 9: Pilikula Regional Science Centre and Department of Science and Technology, government of Karnataka, Bangalore, jointly organized a one day workshop on astronomy and space science for high school teachers at St Agnes College on Wednesday January 9 at 9.30 am.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Sujatha Viradhe, managing partner, L Green ventures, Bangalore. Dr Sr Prem D’Souza, principal, St Agnes College presided over the programme.
Dr K V Rao, director (training), Pilikula Regional Science centre, Francis, representative, block resource centre, department of education, Stany Tauro, president, Karnataka State High School Assistant Teachers Association, Mangalore and J F Nirmal Kumar, scientist, ISRO, Bangalore were the chief guest. Dr Jayantha H, associate professor, St Agnes College was also present on the dais.
Dr Sujatha said that curiosity about astronomy was developed in her early childhood days. Her dad imbibed the passion in her initially which grew with the passing of time.
She added that latest development in space research has been helpful in inventions in the field. NASA, ISRO and other space research institutes have been really doing a better job in space science.
The explorations in space science have fueled interest among astronomers and has given way to further inventions and experiments. A Space mission ‘voyager’, that has been initiated few years ago is still on and likely to be completed by 2025, this is an outstanding project and mission carried out by the space scientists. With this the field of study has been getting into deeper sense day by day and has set a mile stone in space research, she added.
She urged the teachers to encourage the children, students to develop interest in space science and make them go deep into the subject, which indeed helps them to explore and find new things and collect information. Another comet will appear this November, she said.
Dr K V Rao said that we can see stars, Moon and other objects in the sky, but if we go through and study them deeply, there are lots of mysteries. Astronomy is a vast field, students who indulge interest in this filed will surely become a pioneer in Space Research and Astronomy.
He also asked the teachers to make the students develop a special interest in space research and Astronomy so as to make them a leader in the field, he added.
In her presidential address, Sr Prem D’Souza said that wisdom comes from experience especially from elders, parents and teachers and not just by books. Teachers have to seed this wisdom among the students as it has high value and special importance, she added.
Knowledge gained should be given to the students, so as to make them build up their wisdom. Teachers’ role is very difficult, just like that of a honey bee that has to go through nearly 2 million flowers, to make one pound of honey.
She also asked the teachers to fill in creative thoughts into the students and help them in the overall development of them and make them great people in future.
