Mangalore, Jan 19: A one day training programme on 'Women And Human Rights' organized by the Department of Political Science, Human Rights Education Cell, St Agnes College, Mangalore, sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission was organized on Saturday January 19 at 9:30 am.

Jayaprakash Hegde, MP, Udupi-Chikmagalur Loksabha constituency was the chief guest. Dr Sr Prem D’Souza, principal, St Agnes College and Chandra Mohan Maraje, convenor of the programme were also present on the occasion.

In his address, Jayaprakash Hegde questioned in general as to what could be done to the culprits of the Udupi Vasudeva Adiga Murder Case and Delhi Rape Case. Crime has been increasing now at an alarming rate. Even parents have taken courage and are coming forward to file complaints.

"Men should protect women. There is a need to change the mindset of the people and hence a woman should be respected and she should know that she is safe. The law in our country is abundant. Questioning the rape victims has and increasing their turmoil must be stopped."

'Regular amendments to the law will confuse people; lesser the laws, the more effective it will be. Self restraint must be imposed by the media. Police should not be worried by their jurisdictions and must take actions in times of emergencies", he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Sr Prem D’Souza said that women should indulge courage in oneself to face hard situations and hence help in getting the required changes in the present scenario.

"It must be “ME” which can get a change and not just point on the society, police, judicial system and media. Women have to be respected in the society and every woman has to demand for her rights. These sorts of programmes help in getting drastic changes, as there is a chance to ask open questions to the right and resoourse persons, she advised.
