Intense cold wave sweeps Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Jan 27 (IANS): Intense cold wave continued to sweep the Kashmir Valley Sunday as the temperature remained few notches below freezing point.

Sunday's minimum temperature was minus 4.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, while south Kashmir's Pahalgam tourist resort recorded minus 11.4 degrees Celsius.

It was minus 8.0 degrees Celsius in north Kashmir Gulmarg ski resort.

The weather office here said the present cold wave conditions would continue during the next 48 hours as no relief was in sight at the moment.

"The present cold wave conditions would continue in the Kashmir Valley for at least another 48 hours," said an official of the weather office.

Srinagar had recorded the season's coldest night Saturday with the minimum temperature plummeting to minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.

Most people in the city preferred to remain indoors in the Sunday morning to avoid the intense cold.

Parents complained their children suffered from chilblain (frostbite) as they move about carelessly to play on frosty roads.

The Dal Lake in the city has again frozen in parts as boatmen and fishermen are finding it difficult to row their boats.
