M'lore: Student leaders vouch to work for better India at Insignia-2013

Mangalore, Jan 31: About hundred students representing 15 colleges from the district and outside pledged to take up greater individual role in bringing out a change in the society, during the Insignia 2013, Student Leadership Workshop organised by Centre for Integrated Learning in association with Rotary Club of Mangalore North and International Orientation Centre at Rotary Bal Bhavan at Mannagudda in the city on Wednesday. Personality grooming, social sensitivity and Rights and Responsibilities as the central theme of the day-long event participated by Under Graduate and Post Graduate students.

Inaugurating Insignia 2013, Capt. Gopinath P A, Retired Lecturer, Canara Pre-University Collage, stressed on the need for volunteerism and a sense of activism among youth in responding to the genuine needs of the society. Academics and social responsibilities should go hand in hand, he mentioned. He released a specially designed poster depicting the power of RTI (Right To Information) Act to symbolically declare the event inaugurated.

Presiding over the inaugural ceremony, Rotary District Governor of Rotary International District 3180, Dr. Devdas Rai, exhorted the youth to take up socially relevant activities so as to bring about a change in one’s surroundings and in turn bringing about a change in the country. He urged the participants to become more aware of the social and political system in the country and participate constructively in creating a better environment to live in rather than blame the system from outside.

Techie turned social activist, Pramod Karkera from Bangalore delivered the keynote address.

Various aspects of Leadership, value inculcation and social sensitivity were discussed through group dynamics and discussions facilitated by eminent panel of resource persons who included Prof. Radhakrishna from MGM College, Udupi and HRD Master Trainer and convener of Abhiyanam Dr. Shikaripura Krishnamurthy who took the participants through different experiences to drive home the points.

The highlight of the workshop was a brief talk on `Tackling Civic Issues’ by Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Dr. K N Vijayaprakash and an informative session on RTI and its usage for tackling basic civic issues was conducted by Advocate Prithviraj Rai.

Centre for Integrated Learning has been conducting student leadership workshops for high school and college students with the objective sensitizing the young and creating awareness on social issues in the local level.
