Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru hanged

New Delhi, Feb 9 (IANS): Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged in the national capital's Tihar Jail at 8 a.m. Saturday, less than a week after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea, officials said.

"Afzal Guru was hanged at 8 a.m.," Home Secretary R.K. Singh told reporters.

"We received the president's rejection of his mercy plea on Feb 3. We moved accordingly then," he said.

Security has been stepped up in some towns, he added.

Afzal Guru was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court in 2004. His hanging was scheduled for October 2006, but was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition.

Nine people were killed in the Dec 13, 2001 parliament attack when five heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire. There were about 100 MPs in the building at the time of the attack.

The terrorists were shot dead.

Guru was convicted of plotting the terror attack.

Asked if he had been kept in the loop, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said: "Absolutely."

He told CNN-IBN that Guru's body will be buried within the jail campus, according to the jail manual rules, and not handed over to his relatives in Kashmir.

The burial would be done according to religious rites, he added.

"As per jail manual, the burial of a convict is held inside the prison campus," he said.

He also said he did not apprehend any law and order problems.

A curfew has been clamped in parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been repeatedly demanding the execution of Afzal Guru and questioned the delay in his hanging, welcomed the execution, but said it was a "delayed decision".

Rajiv Pratap Rudy of the BJP said: " Hanging of Afzal Guru is the right thing. We welcome the decision. The people of the country were waiting for it. But it was a delayed decision."

Afzal's family was informed about hanging: home secretary

Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's family had been informed ahead of his hanging in Delhi's Tihar jail Saturday morning, Home Secretary R.K. Singh told reporters.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abullah was also kept in the loop about the hanging. "The chief minister was taken into confidence," R.K. Singh told NDTV.

"The family was informed earlier. I checked from the jail authorities and they informed me that two letters had been sent by speed post. The DGP Kashmir was asked to crosscheck too. It is not correct that the family was not informed," he said.

Guru, who was convicted of plotting the terror attack and was hanged at 8 a.m., is to be buried within the jail premises, as per the jail manual, added Singh.

"He will buried strictly according to the jail manual and according to the religious prescription," he said.

The home secretary said he did not apprehend any law and order problems.

"We have no apprehensions about security problems."

Jammu on high alert following Afzal Guru hanging

A high alert was sounded in Jammu region Saturday after parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in Tihar Jail was hanged in New Delhi, officials said.

"We have sounded high alert in the entire region and there is undeclared curfew in communally sensitive areas," a senior police officer said. Amongst the sensitive areas are Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Doda, Banihal, Poonch and Rajouri.

The administration has made heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces at vulnerable and sensitive areas while the army has been asked to be on stand by.

"There is no report of any untoward incident from any part of Jammu region so far," the official said.

Afzal Guru, hailing from Sopore area of north Kashmir was hanged Saturday after sentenced to death for his central role in the Dec 13, 2001 attack on the Indian parliament that almost led to a war between India and Pakistan.

Afzal hanging better late than never: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said the hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was better late than never.

"Der aaye durast aaye (Better late than never)," Modi said on the microblogging site Twitter.

Afzal Guru was convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in 2001. He was hanged Saturday morning in Tihar jail.

The BJP Saturday welcomed the hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, saying "it was a right move".

"We welcome the move. Though delayed, it was a right move. The opposition and the entire country was harping on the hanging of Afzal Guru," Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said here.

"The entire country was waiting for this," he said.

I think Afzal Guru was innocent, says Hamid Mir

Afzal Guru was "innocent", said Pakistani journalist and TV anchor Hamid Mir after the man, convicted for his central role in the attack on the Indian parliament, was hanged in New Delhi Saturday.

"...I think he was innocent but hanged in India," tweeted Hamid Mir.

If it was BJP govermnet they would have gone and left them to their Godfathers house.

@ sudheer. Its pointless trying to prove my point about being tough and dealing with terror with an 'iron fist'.

Secondly, i cant comprehend what you are trying to say... google, small size, firing at the border, etc etc...Its sound odd.

Its just that my geography was good since school days.. i dont need google map to figure where is Amritsar dude! (Dont feel J!)

I suggest that you stick to the topic without deviating and avoid getting personal perhaps you need to see the number of people who have disagreed with your unclear and hazy views.

Solution was to send commandos to amritsar airport which is very small in size you must have not able to find out in google but the same time they were taken the flight to Kandhahar. If you would have been stationed at border, then you could have fired because you will love to google never able to under the ground reality.
My question to you, if your relatives would have been travelling in that flight what suggestion you could have given???

@ Sudheer,FYI, incase you did'nt know, AMritsar is appox 30-40 K.M from International fenced border firmly guarded by Indian BSF and a strong frontier city of Indian territory.

Secondly, only a layman and politician will sit and question "WHAT CAN WE DO?" whereas our armed forces can actually "DO" things.

Well, in the 90's an Air France A300 was hijacked by ALgerian based radical terror group in ALgiers and when the aircraft landed on French soil...France sent in their commandoes and killed all terrorists on board. (They showed this on discovery channel a few years ago and 1 of several anti hijack raids) however they were a few fatalities on civilian side but they showed their 'no compromise no mercy attitude' to the world of terror.

Solution would have been to send in the commandos on 24th December 1999 who were actually waiting in Amritsar Airport rather than letting it take off from Indian soil and this my friend was the opinion of the experts back then.

For you kind information, all the 300 passenger were common citizens not even a single VIP was present & NDA did the correct thing by saving its people. One wrong thing they have done is they left 3 terrorists without giving them any poison.

    @ KR Prabhu,
You stated that the BJP-NDA government released dreaded terrorist just to save the lives of 300 people and that they were helpless.

Well, I would like to correct and add that in the first place this need would'nt have had arised if NDA had ordered the CISF/Commando forces in Amritsar to surround & prevent Indian Airlines from flying off to Lahore.

NDA messed it up by lack of will, poor coordination, poor planning by disaster management team thereby letting the aircraft fly out of Indian airspace, as a result of which, we had to later release those 3 terrorists in the negotiations that followed.

As per defence analysts back then, All NDA govt had to do was to deploy troops around aircraft and negotiate hard with the aircraft being on our soil instead of being indecisive.

And just for your info. It WAS'NT Mohd. Hafeez who was released ... They were dreaded Masood Azhar, Omar Shaikh and Zargar who were released and carefully door- delivered by Jaswant Singh.

Some people like to express their views differently (far from reality)to impress the readers that they belong to a different class like Intellectuals. Also whenever Naxals are arrested or killed in an encounter, lots of so called intellectuals, human rights protectors surface with their articles condemning the govt, because they or their near and dear one's are not the victims of the atrocities.Similarly if Bulsam or the people she cares for had suffered from the people like Afzal Guru, then she would have been the first one to praise our President and our Judiciaryfor hanging Afzal Guru. Probably we would have had to read hundreds of lengthy paragraphs criticizing the govt for their delayed action until then.

Today India stands tall. It has announced to the world that it is not soft on terror and yet it is not a banana republic which judges people based on mob fury. Our government (UPA) and our justice system has provided every avenue to the accused and only then sent them to their maker. Unlike the BJP which all this while has been screaming from the roof tops blaming the government and yet had released the dreaded terrorists during the Kandahar hijack drama, sent our army to the border ( don't know why) only to ask them to return after pressure from America and now have nothing to say when their allies the Akali dal want clemency for the terrorist Balwant singh Rajona. A: Yes
Q: Has the punishment lost its value due to delay?
    A: Yes
Q: Did this serve the "deterent" purpose of the punishment?
A: No - it is too late
Q: Shouldn't we question the roles / responsibilities/ accountabilities of institutions like state government (delayed recommendation by 4 years), Home minsitry (PC Chidambaram openly stated that the mercy petition will be reviewed in the order and Afjal Guru was in numbre 22 in that order), and President (Mrs. Patil was so busy with foreign tours)in deciding issues of national importance?
    A: A BIG YES

Finally - In response to Bulsam's comment - the verdict was passed in 2006, before RSS/ BJP made it an issue. And keep faith in our judicial system to give fair judgement without succumbing in to public opinion. If that was the case - Delhi rapists would have been dead by now!

Congrats to UPA Govt for hanging Afzal Guru now and Kasab some time back. The Govt has taken the right steps. All terrorists belonging to any group and ideology should be punished. Also people who have orchestred the communal riots and rapists also should be punished. Govt should institute Fast Track Courts to speed up the justice. BJP supporters should not forget that a dreaded terroist was released during their rule. Why did not they hang him instead of releasing him during NDA rule? UPA led by Congress is taking correct dicisions at the correct time. Long live UPA and a democratic & secualr India.

It happens sometimes in legal trials and Balsams argument cannot be just ignored all of a sudden. You know the the trouble happened to our paji Sarbajit Singh in Pakistane . He was caught by Pakistani border forces when he mistakenly crossed the border under the influence of liquor. He was convicted of spying and carrying the bomb blasts and was awarded death penalty. His identity was never verified or proved in court and no forensic evidence was provided at his trial to link him to the bomb attacks. I condemn terrorism committed by any one because the security of country is paramount which is not negotiable. Now Sarabjith is innocent .Can you support the verdict against Sarabjith in this manner? Sorry... i am not defending Afzal Guru.

Mr. Bulsam: I think you are indicating the technicalities. Evidence being circumstantial etc. It reminds me the arguments in US against capturing Bin Laden alive, precisely because they do not have evidence that can be provided in a court of law. But when the technicalities do not allow proof of guilt, circumstantial evidence at least in this case wherein the challenge was to a nation called India by attacking its institutions is in question, hanging is the right thing to do. By the way, the evidence for the kin of 13 people killed in that attack, was clearly provided..viz., the dead bodies of their loved ones. Kindly stop shedding crocodile tears and paint a communal picture out of this punishment meted to a anti-national/social element.

In the trial which took place the provisions of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights had not been respected. Supreme Court noted that there is no direct evidence of his involvement. The evidence was mainly circumstantial. All three courts including Supreme Court have acquitted him of the charges under POTA of belonging to either a terrorist organization or a terrorist gang. Court also noted that the evidence was fabricated. Most importantly he was not given any worthwhile legal assistance to defend him during interrogation. When Ram Jethmalani offered to be his lawyer the Hindutva goons attacked his office. One also recalls here that the lawyers offering to hold the brief of accused in 11 July 2006 Mumbai blasts were also threatened by Hindutva outfit, a real case of cowardly display of pseudo patriotism.
The base on which Supreme Court has given the judgment has been built by the police with methods which are questionable. While Supreme Court deserves all the respect, one has to see that the primary investigation done by the police, whatever its flaws forms the base of the judgment. When that investigation has holes should it be accepted as it is presented?
One can understand that for RSS and its affiliates this is the golden opportunity to display their patriotism, partly also to wash the sin of accompanying the terrorists to Kandahar by one of their ministers. One can also understand the success of RSS in communalizing the social thinking to the extent that now truth and humane values have ceased to matter in the face of communal thinking. Justice is being converted into revenge and punishment is meant to further communalize the society rather than a means of reform, rather than being an occasion to introspect as to why such crimes are going on. So does it mean that the punishment is being given to assuage the collective national conscience or for the consciousness of the section of dominant middle classes.

At last we found one such highly respectable, much needed, true Indian, very strong character and best suited for post of The President of India i.e. none other than one & only “H.H. Pranab Dada”. Many people said BJP lost “One” electoral plank but same people forgot to understand that Congress and JDS lost many votes of likely minded people who always supported terrorist activist against India. Few also asking hanging of Modi, Sadhvi, etc, but they have to hang Bukhari and Owais first then everyone if needed

The UPA govt had to finally hang him ONLY because of BJP's pressure. But still wonder, if the bodies are not handed over and not shown to the public,it should not be a surprise after 15-20 years , it leaks out that both are alive but in our gifted neighbouring country. Thanks again BJP for pushing the UPA to hang him. Great victory for BJP then congress for waiting for so many years to drag & drag the issue. BJP can now proudly add it to their next years election , that its due to their pressure Afhzal guru got hanged. Manish tiwari begging for another 5 year term sounds so cheap and disgusting. In my view such people deserve this kind of punishment otherwise we will have a people asking for lots of things and when denied, will wage war against their own country. Where will be the law and order? We have an elected Govt. chosen by people but if you made up your mind to go with Pakistan and that is the rights Kashmiri's are looking for, then this will never end.

A MBBS graduate and aspiring IAS candidate , he could have chosen to be brilliant civil servant , a physician or a politicial . He chose the path of fighting against system , rebellious , notorious ( in general terrorism ). We cannot defend him for what he did , but cannot blame completly as he was for his and peaple rights.
