Udupi, Feb 19: For the first time, Karavali s’ own famous Yakshagana will be presented with the blend of latest technology with “Gadhayuddha Yaksha Vismaya” by Vision Group Brahmavar at the government high school ground, Brahmavar on Saturday February 23.
Yakshagana, the popular theatre art form of the coastal region, combines music, dance, dialogue, costume and make-up with a traditional style of stage setup. Traditionally it goes on all night till sunrise.
“Gadhayuddha Yaksha Vismaya” will be of a duration of 3 hours. The event will also include felicitation of various achievers. Over 5,000 people are expected to witness the programme.
The cost of organizing the programme is estimated to be Rs 8.5 lac.
The Yakshagana will be directed by Heranjalu Gopala Ganiga.
“This is a dream project and we are working for it for more than a year. We do not want Yakshagana to be restricted to the Karavali region. Rather it should be famous worldwide. Before we initiated this plan we clarified and discussed with senior Yakshagana artists and practiced with them,” said Charan Raj, the technical director of the event.
As far as Yakshagana performance is concerned, there are certain situations which cannot be enacted on stage due to lack of facilities. For example in “Gadhayuddha”, Hanuman’s part will usually not be showed because it is impossible to be enacted without technology; in such places the new ideas work. This performance will include 'Gadhayuddha Yaksha Vismaya'.
This programme will be dedicated to the national Yakshagana award winner D Haradi Rama Ganiga.
It will be an effort to make everyone understand the importance of Yakshagana which has great history of seven centuries. Mohiniattam, Kathakali and many other arts are based on Yakshagana.
Generations passed but the love for this special art form remains the same. The program aims at unveiling the traditional folk art in a unique way. Such an art will be exhibited with latest technology. It is a common belief that use of technology in Yakshagana is inconceivable to do away with. This is a small attempt to blend tradition with technology.
"Attempt will be made to spread our culture through this programme. It will also try to create awareness among the youth about the culture; to unveil their interest in Indian culture; to create love for Yakshagana among the youth and to provide recreation. The programme will also try to create awareness of the richness of folk forms and to exhibit the use of technology in Yakshagana in a right manner. This will create a remarkable milestone in the history of Yakshagana," said the orgnizers.
Laxmivaratirtha Swamiji of Udupi Shiroor Math will inaugurate the programme. There will be a competition between Carnatic classic and Bagavathige, and classical music by Yeshwanth. Bagavathige by Gopala Ganiga will be an additional treat.
The event will feature performances by 34 artists irrespective of religion. Among them are Heranjalu Gopala Ganiga, Upunda Nagendra Roa, Praveen Ganiga, Ragavendra Padiyaar and Argodu Mohandas Shenoy and others.
