Church barred family’s entry, alleges Suryanelli victim’s mother

Kottayam, Mar 8 (PTI ) : The mother of the Suryanelli gang rape victim on Friday alleged that her family members had been restrained from attending the church by the vicar of their parish in view of recent developments in the 1996 case.

The church, however, refuted the charge maintaining that no ban of any kind had been imposed on anyone from coming to the church and saying prayers or attending the mass.

According to the girl’s mother, three weeks ago, after the Sunday mass, the vicar of the church in Kottayam district told the girl’s father that they should try to avoid coming to the church.

Though the vicar did not cite any specific reason for this, apparently it could be due to the recent developments in the case, she said.

“The vicar did not say that there is a ban on us. He, however, suggested that we should try to avoid coming to the church. He did not say this in a harsh tone but in a friendly manner,” the girl’s mother told a Malayalam television channel.

“The vicar’s words deeply pained us, especially since this has happened when the fasting season of Lent is on,” she said.

She, however, said for the last few years they had been attending the same church and never faced any discrimination or hostile attitude from the church authorities.

However, the vicar of the church dubbed the allegation as “totally baseless”.

“It is surprising. No such thing has happened,” he said.

On Monday last, the Kerala High court adjourned the Suriyanelli case to March 15.

The Supreme Court had in January set aside the High Court’s order, acquitting all 35 accused and directed it to hear the matter afresh.

God and the teachings of his Church can never be wrong but there can be sinful or misguided or corrupt individuals or Clergy within the Church who bring shame and disrepute to God's Church. I am no judge but all I can say that if it is true that the Vicar has asked the Victim's family to avoid coming to the Church as reported in the news then it is sinful, shameful, disgraceful and anti-Christ.

I hope there is no political pressure from Kurien & his supporters on the Clergy of that Parish.

People are not reading the subject properly. They are just reading the comments and commenting on the comments of the opposite party. Priest did not ban them to enter the church. If you read carefully

Very SAD to see such behaviour and mindset of a Priest,on the contrary the priest should have encouraged the victim and her falily to spend more time in the Church and pray to GOD for peace of mind.
I am really feeling ashamed to call myself a Christian because of such narrow minded people.

It is unbelievable.Vicar must have advised the mother to avoid appearance in general public to be on the safer side which is taken by the victims mother in the other-way.Church always welcomes the gravest sinner into the arms and gives courage, strength ,peace and chance to repent followed by forgiveness.

I don't find any difference between a Catholic Priest and a Politicians. A Politicians preaches "A true representative of people", whereas a Priest preaches A true representative of God". In Practical both are opposite "A true representatives of evil".

Yesterday in one of the the national news channels the priest in-charge has denied the allegation that this family is barred from entering the church. He has said that some political parties are spreading rumours. So its difficult to come to a conclusion as to who is wrong. If the priest, in fact, has barred them, it is totally wrong and unacceptable. God is not judgemental and cruel like us. He is merciful and full of compassion.
