Anti-rape law: Age of consent to be raised to 18 years

New Delhi, Mar 18 (IANS): The government has agreed to increase the age of consent from 16 to 18 years in the anti-rape bill it plans to introduce in the Lok Sabha Tuesday, informed sources said Monday.

"Consensual sex with a girl under 18 years old will be treated as rape," said a government source after a consensus on the issue was arrived at an all-party meeting here.

According to these sources, in case of a minor who is accused of gender crimes, he will have to undergo a probation of one year as punishment for the first offence but will be charged with rape if he is booked for a second time.

The government will bring the amendments on the issue when the bill is brought up in the lower house.

The cabinet will meet Monday evening to approve the amendments, said the sources.

@ Lydia Lobo , kadri. Have u gone threw the proposed amendment. Exception regarding age of consent in case boy married to girl is to remain at 16. In other cases its 18 , but exception if minor gets involved . For first time offence probation upto one year. Second time , he can be booked . This new rule can be misused specially by Juveniles.

I don't belong to a fraction of society that marries off their daughters or brings bride to thier sons before 18.

As such, I don't think the particular point you mentioned makes any difference to my concern that is for all teenage girls in general.

That is a relief. Its true that though there is entitlement, nobody wish their children involved in activities that are granted by the law of marriage. Then, what is the need for such allocation ?

I am glad for the victims who will be abused before they turn 18. The culprits should not be given any opportunity to get away from paying for what they did.

Do I or you have a control over who will when be a rape victim in a country called India ?

At-least, a sexual abuse will be termed a rape if limit of 18 remains (not lowered to 16) because the victim is a minor as per the law ?
