He wanted to lose weight, lost life instead
Bangalore, Mar 21 (DHNS): A 16-year-old boy, who was admitted to a City hospital to undergo liposuction (removal of excess fat), died due to an alleged overdose of anaesthesia.
Abhishek, who weighed 85 kg, died on Wednesday evening at Columbia Asia Hospital.
He was brought there from Panacea Hospital, where he was supposed to undergo liposuction. Abhishek’s parents alleged that on Sunday doctors at Panacea Hospital administered an overdose of anaesthesia to the boy, following which he suffered a cardiac arrest.
“Just after he was prepared for surgery (at Panacea), doctors informed me that Abhishek had suffered a cardiac arrest. The doctors said due to this my son had gone into a comatose condition,” said Ramesh, the boy’s father.
He was shifted to Columbia Asia Hospital at Yeshwantpur on Monday. Arvind Kasargod, chief of medical service at the hospital, said the boy was referred in a comatose state.
“We did the best to revive Abhishek. We informed the parents that the boy was in a critical condition and chances of his survival were remote,” he said.
Abhishek’s parents and relatives claimed to have overheard the doctors from Columbia Asia and Panacea discussing the large dose of anaesthesia administered to Abhishek. “The doctors at Columbia questioned Govardhan, anaesthesiologist at Panacea, why he had given a young boy such a large dose. Govardhan said he had expected the boy to sustain it,” Ananthmurthy, the boy’s uncle said.
Doctors at Columbia Asia declared Abhishek dead on Wednesday evening. His brain ceased to function due to lack of oxygen supply. Kasargod said it was difficult to ascertain whether anaesthesia triggered the cardiac arrest.
Denying the allegations, Panacea Hospital said Abhishek had suffered cardiac arrest even before he was taken for surgery. He was successfully resuscitated, the hospital claimed. “After administering anaesthesia, the patient was prepared for surgery,” said Kamala, Chief Medical Officer, Panacea Hospital.
“He was given an injection to reduce bleeding during surgery. It was after this that he suffered a cardiac arrest. But we managed to revive him in a matter of minutes and before he was shifted to the ICU.” She added that on insistence of the parents, the patient was shifted to another hospital. “We referred him to Columbia Asia Hospital at Yeshwantpur and our anaesthesiologist Govardhan travelled with the family,” she said.
She, however, denied that Abhishek was referred to Columbia Asia in a sedated state.
“He was convulsing continuously and hence we had sedated him. There is a very thin line between being sedated and a comatose stage. We are very sure he was not in a comatose state,” she said.
Though the Subramanyanagara police were informed by Columbia Asia, no complaint was lodged by Abhishek’s parents. His body was taken home on Wednesday night.

Key messege for all weight loosers is till you are young don't go to surgery . You just need to come out of comfort zone and make some hard working. Intake proteens. Rest of things read anp's comment.

Fri, Mar 22 2013Hello to all people who are looking for weight loss.
it is possible to lose weight through exersice and diet unless you have serious medical conditions (where the experts dont allow you to perform any phsyical exersise)
i personally have lost 19 kgs from 90 kg to 71 kg in a period of 6 months through a combination of diet and running.
now i run 4 days a week about 10kms
each run. (i am currently 24 years old)
even if u cant run for more than few minutes initially u can keep on increasing it weekly. also when injured you can try other alternates like swimming, cycling
and cross-trainer in a gym.
also there is no better way to lose than dieting . also keep in mind to intake all the essential nutrients and salts but cut down the sugars and carbohydrates/fats.
all it takes is ur will and dedication to achieve that goal.
sometimes the weight scale might not reflect your effort but keeping up ur dedication will definitely reach ur goal !
i feel sorry for the young boy and his parents . surgery to lose fat at 16 and weighing 85 is definitly not required.
the doctors who recomended the surgery for the boy should be condemned !
sorry for the long post .

Thu, Mar 21 2013Fools are the parents of this boy, Instead make him run and exercise brought him on the hospital bed to make him thin...
This is the perfect example for Exercise brings you good health and not the hospital bed
Even if you are sick any kind of deadly disease try to shed your sweat which takes out the toxins from your body along with the causing agent of your disease ..
Remember Cyclist Mr Armstrong... other sports person.. If they have come out from the disease is mainly because they sweated out everyday with their exercise..

Thu, Mar 21 2013I read the comment about loosing weight of singer Adnan Sami. For your kind information he underwent gastric bypass surgery. And regarding this boy it was too early for him to have a liposuction. he still had his long life to live. Parents should have opposed for this kind of procedure. And regarding the overdose of anesthesia, sometime if a person is allergic to some of anesthetic drugs, one will not come to know unless they receive the drug. we can not blame all the time the health team. we all should understand sometime the other side of the cases. Thank you. And I feel so sorry for that boy's family.

Thu, Mar 21 2013Doctors have become monsters now a days.Basic reason is apart from their profession they are into several business which keeps their attention diverted from their patients. If every doctor is serious in his profession this type of incidence can be averted.

Thu, Mar 21 2013I would like to give one example regarding weight loss.Famous Pakistani singer Adnan Sami was despartely trying to reduce his weight. He underwent all types of surgeries in London. But nothing worked properly. Finally it became life threatening. To his good luck, someone suggested him to consult one famous doctor in USA.He bought flight ticket to US. Doctor examined him only for 10 minutes and asked him if he wanted to reduce weight seriously.Mr.Sami said "yes doctor"..Doctor ordered him to live like a GOAT for six months. Only letuce, cucumber, tomato and fruit juice. Adnan sami did what doctor ordered him to do.Now go to google and check Adnan Sami's photo before and after...

Thu, Mar 21 2013Today's market demands Quick Fix method for everything.
Surgery is the worst remedy for underlying metabolism defect, which caused that boy to put on weight.
His hormone levels should have been assessed & after exhausting all other less harmless methods this extreme step should have been taken.
The anesthetist calculated the amount of anesthesia on the basis of his weight only. His heart condition should have been checked on treadmill.
Diet & exercise will help lose weight gradually with no harm to the health, but advertisements always mislead with less experienced medical staff it proved life taking rather than life saving procedure in the end.
Anesthetic related deaths can be prevented but in 1% of patients, with experts attending the patients, but alas a young boy's life was terminated untimely.

Thu, Mar 21 2013While I agree that discipline in eating and work out is very important. We can't comment anything on the face value. Perhaps he had obesity problem because of very different reasons than just over eating or lack of physical work out.

Thu, Mar 21 2013Unnecessarily few of Parents worrying their Children’s weight and going to surgical help by exaggerating the obese of their children. Instead they can resort to strict implementation of control of eating habits and forcing their children to do some physical exercise will reduce the overweight issues. Country like Russia still doesn’t use the anesthesia very often unless it is really critical to use.
