EU wants to send observers for Pakistan polls

Islamabad, Mar 22 (IANS): Pakistan said Thursday that the European Union has approached the country for sending observers for the coming parliamentary elections scheduled to be held May 11.

"We have received the EU request and the request is under process," Xinhua quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary said no concern was raised by Islamabad-based foreign diplomats at a special briefing about the elections this week.

At the weekly press briefing, the foreign diplomats were mainly interested in election procedures and they were given comprehensive briefing by representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Information and Broadcasting and the Election Commission, he said.

They were told that the government was committed to holding free, fair and transparent elections, he said, adding that Pakistan would allow foreign observers to monitor the elections.
