Two critically injured in Kashmir

Srinagar, March 24 (IANS): A civilian and a police constable were critically injured when militants fired at a police party in Sopore town in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday afternoon.

Superintendent of Police Syed Imtiyaz Hussain told IANS from Sopore that the incident happened when two police vehicles were caught in a traffic jam in Iqbal market.

"While the policemen were clearing the traffic jam, militants fired at them. One constable and a civilian were critically injured," he said.

"Police did not retaliate as the market was thronged by people and retaliatory firing by police could have resulted in civilian casualties," he said.

The attackers escaped with the injured constable's weapon.
