Udupi, Mar 25: "Konkani is our mother tongue. By reading and learning it we have become intellectuals. But in the present modernized world, we have lost interest and thus forgotten the language. It is our duty to preserve the language and promote it to next generation," said Bishop Gerald Lobo.

"It is with this regard, the Karnataka government from 2007 has given permission to teach Konkani as the third language to students from Class 6 to Class 10.  In this regard, the Konkani Prachar Sanchalan is striving very hard. Let students opt for the Konkani language in large numbers in their schools."

He addressed the gathering during the concluding ceremony of the ‘Konkani Mojo Fudar’ awareness street play held at Milagres Cathedral in Udupi on Sunday March 24.

Fr Stany Lobo, Parish Priest of Cathedral, Fr Henry Mascarenhas, secretary of Bishop were the guest of honor.

With the aim of creating awareness among students about Konkani learning, the Konkani Prachar Sanchalan in cooperation with Konkani academy organized awareness street play in 40 locations of twin districts.

The street play written by Arun Raj Rodrigues, directed by Christopher Neenasaum was enacted by Repetory Kalakul artists like Darrel D’Souza Vamanjoor, Melvyn Avinash Pais, Malcon Rego Derebail, Maria Joyce Vamanjoor, Sunil Antony, Sandeep Masarenhas Shaktinagar, Hanly Coelho Milagres and by Anil D’Souza Miyapadav. Ananth Kasargod and Rohan Lobo Angelore rendered music.

Vitori Karkal welcomed the gathering while Roy Castelino,  Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president delivered the vote of thanks.

The play was staged successfully with cooperation from Sandeep Monteiro Kayyar, Sheldon Crasta Bendur, Vernon D’Souza, Alwyn Fernandes and Prem.
