India should stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly nation: TN

Chennai, Mar 27 (PTI): Ratcheting up pressure over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Tamil Nadu Assembly today adopted a strongly-worded resolution asking the Centre to stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly nation and slap sanctions on it while demanding a referendum for a separate Tamil Eelam.

The Assembly adopted a resolution, moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, urging the Centre to take such firm steps against Colombo till the "suppression" of Tamils was stopped and those responsible for "genocide and war crimes" faced a credible international probe.

The resolution was adopted by a voice vote after protesting DMK members were evicted from the Assembly which was boycotted by Vijaykant-led DMDK.

It demanded that India move a resolution at the UN Security Council seeking a referendum for a separate Tamil Eelam (homeland) for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The resolution came close on the heels of Jayalalithaa writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying India should boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Colombo in November this year.

She has also stated that Sri Lankan players should not participate in the upcoming IPL matches in Chennai in view of the prevailing anti-Sinhalese sentiments in the state, forcing the IPL governing council to accede to the demand.

Moving the resolution, Jayalalithaa said the ongoing students protest was reflective of her government's initiate on the Sri Lankan issue even as she requested them to withdraw the stir and resume classes.

Launching a tirade against the Centre and DMK, she alleged that both had "failed" to ensure ceasefire in 2009 when hostilities were at the peak in Sri Lanka.

She charged DMK supremo M Karunanidhi with adopting "duplicity" on the issue and said people were aware of it. Her remarks drew vociferous protests from DMK members.

Speaker P Dhanapal ordered for eviction of agitated DMK members when his plea for restoration of order in the House went unheeded.

The DMK had last week pulled out of the UPA coalition, accusing the Centre of watering down a US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka that was adopted by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Though India voted against Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu parties accused the government of letting down Sri Lankan Tamils by not persuading the UN to come out with stronger language against the island nation.

Sri Lanka is the only friendly country around us. And LTTE was a terrorist organisation. Even if you prove that Prabhakaran's son was killed brutally only the persons responsible should be punished not the entire country of Sri Lanka. They did a good job by getting rid of Prabhakaran which India should have done after he killed Rajiv Gandhi.

Leslei Fernandes, Conflict and war causes all sort of destruction. Former Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi was killed by Tamil Elam In India there is child labor, When he reached a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, he got out of his car and began to walk towards the dais where he would deliver a speech. Along the way, he was garlanded by many well-wishers, Congress party workers and school children. At 22:21 the assassin, Dhanu, approached and greeted him. She then bent down to touch his feet and detonated an RDX explosive laden belt tucked below her dress. Gandhi, his assassin and 14 others were killed in the explosion that followed. The assassination was caught on film by a local photographer, whose camera and film was found at the site though the cameraman himself died in the blast.
So Mr. Leslie Fernandes who is to be blamed. All these tensions were started by Tamil. If you think you should support Tamil Nadu and Jayalalitha then other countries will support Pakistan in Kashmir. Just stop interfering with other countries to grab their land and let them live on their own.

I fully agree with your comments Thomas Pascal Andrade, Valencia / Toronto especially - for any reason the child should not have been killed brutally. In any case, India should never interfere in internal matters of other country UNLESS they ask your help. Otherwise we should be prepared to allow (officially) Pakistan to interfere in Kashmir. When will this Tamil politicians understand that we (India) are playing double standards on the issues of similar nature? First of all let me ask this Tamil leadership one question - did anybody from Sri Lanka ask your help? I have met and talked to many Sri Lankan Tamils living in Colombo. some are bank employees some are in business and doing well. What will happen to those Tamils in Sri Lanka who want to continue living their and integrate their community with the main steam? our meddling with the issue will not make original Sri Lankan's angry and situation will be worse for the Tamils already living there? None of the people with whom I talked want Karunanidhi to interfere. In fact they do not like him or any Indian for that matter. Every 3 out of 4 truck now in Sri Lanka are Indian made. Because of our hatred Sri Lankan govt has increased tax on Indian goods. Korean trucks are cheaper now and they are buying that. China has already given several 'GIFTS' like International Convention center, Mall. New Colombo - Jafna highway is being built by a Chinese company. What India has given? let us continue with politics and slowly china will take over our interests in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is free now from terror. few years back people used to fear walking on the streets of Colombo. That situation is not there now. My impression after my visit to Sri Lanka is that the Govt will take care of Tamil population. But it is slow process. Peace must be given a chance. If outsiders meddle in the affairs then it will cause more harm for Sri Lankan Tamils.

Yes Dinesh, Sri Lankans are (were) friendly. I think they will not be anymore. Let me share the following with Daiji Readers:
During last Christmas holidays I was in Sri Lanka with my family for 8 days. We had a dedicated driver with a car for the entire duration. We have covered most of the Island except the north (Jafna & Trincomalee. The Driver (Fernando) has sacrificed his Christmas celebration with his family, to take us around. He told me later he was reluctant to come for an Indian but agreed with his tour managers only because I did not arrive in Colombo from Chennai!!! The hatred towards Indians is already building up in ordinary Sri Lankans due to this idiotic Tamil politicians interfering in their internal affairs and also India not showing due respect to their elected Head of State. My observations of the that country - 1. It is very clean, green everywhere 2. people are generally friendly, mostly smiling. I have never see a fight in 8 days. There were many occasions where our driver could have fought with another driver (I could have done myself in India) but conflicts have been avoided. 3. Roads are of same width as NH 66 but well maintained. no pot holes. The driver never exceeded 60 kmph for the entire tour. I did not see any spot checking by police or radar. 4. The driver never used his moblie while driving. he always parked the car to receive or make calls. He never stopped even once on the road like our trucks & busses do in Udupi 5. Accidents are very very rare. I saw only one in Colombo. The bottom line is the citizens have fear of the government & the laws. THIS IS MISSING IN INDIA. I became sad after coming back from Sri Lanka. Because After seeing them progressing slowly I have started feeling that we Indians (the way we are behaving)will never improve as a country. I think in order to feel better, I should either visit Pakistan or Somalia.

The best solution for Tamil uproar over Sri Lanka is to impose president rule in Tami Nadu. Tamil Nadu has no right to determine the international diplomatic issues.

Jayalalitha & Karunanidhi should stop interfering in India's foreign policy. After all India does not consist of just one state called Tamil Nadu. The Sri Lankan Tamils have been in northern Sri Lanka for more than 300 years. They were taken by the British & the Dutch as labourers in the Tea and Sugarcane plantations. They are actually 'foreigners' and hold Sri Lankan passports.

Aren't the Sri Lankan Tamils "foreigners" ? There are alot of Indians in the US, UK, Canada, Mauritius, Africa etc. Now if these people ( who have left India generations ago ) are in trouble, should we go all out to help them ? What's the logic ?

Our Tamil politicians are wrong in urging the Central Govt. to take extreme steps towards Srilanka. In fact India put itself in a very difficult position by voting against SL recently, who were friendly and supportive to India. The war between SL and the Tamil Tigers was more than 3-decade old, which they would not have brought to an end unless and until they did at the end with the help of China, for which many countries are blaming SL. SL is a very small country and the Tamils who went there to work on plantations, lived there happily and then started to fight for a separate country. How dare they? Which country would accept this? India fought tooth & nail when Punjab wanted to have their own country and successfully brought the situation under control. India is still fighting with Kashmiris. In the process, thousands of militants, terrorists, innocent civilians and police and military force lost their lives. Just imagine if Sri Lanka still have to fight with those separatists, who had just terrorised not only the tiny island but also its giant neighbour, India. India lost Rajiv Gandhi for their terrorism. We never heard about suicidal bombing before Rajiv Gandhi was killed, which was introduced by this dreaded terrorist group. Tamil liberation groups have not done any good thing to their own Tamils either. They kidnapped children & girls in order to enrol them to fight the govt. force. Many Tamils lost their lives many escaped from the country and took refuge in India, Canada & many European Countries. No doubt SL did excess in curbing the terrorism and in the process many lost their lives, including the son & family of the LTTE Supremo, Prabhakaran. They should not have killed the child. However, LTTE too did not spare any children in their killing spree. In fact they did worst in their fight of 30 years than what SL forces did at the end. At last there is peace in the country now. Let's congratulate them for bringing peace which was torn by the LTTE.

    DEAR BLAAN,
WHAT LANKA DID TOWARDS THE END OF THE BLOODY CONFLICT IS NOT RIGHT.
OF COURSE THEY WERE HAUNTED BY PRABHAKARAN.
BUT KILLING A CHILD IN COLD BLOOD IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.
THEY MUST OWN THE RESPONSIBILITY, APOLOGISE AND HANDOVER THE PERPETRATORS TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY FOR DELIVERY OF JUSTICE.
BUT KILLING A CHILD OF 12 IS NOT AT ALL IMAGINABLE.
WILL YOU TELL ME THAT TH

These Dumb/corrupt/ethnic favoring politicians of Tamilnadu just for the sake of playing with the Tamil sentiments & polorising their votes are dictating terms to the Govt towards its Diplomatic tips tot he Govt to bantand with rgards to Lankan Issue. This is like baba Ramdev giving tips to Govt to ban Currency notes above Rs 100 and Mint more of coins to stop black money. These dingbats dont even understand the external threat to not only Tamilnadu but whole country if China gets inside the vaccum India may create in Lanka if they have to heed to their demands. China is just waiting to flex its muscles in Indian ocean & India's one wrong move with Lanka is what they are waiting. After that we are all sorrunded by hostiles round the country & Tamilnadu might realise their mistake when one "Made in PRC" burns their ....down under.

Just for my own knowledge I want to know how the Sri Lankans have Similar Surnames like our Indian Catholics from Mangalore/Goa/Vasai. Pl see the surnames of many of Srilankan Cricketrs, which ends with Vaas, Perera, D'silva. But I understand that they are all Buddhists. How Buddhists are having Portuguese/Spanish origin Surnames ? Can any one throw some light on this through this column of Daiji.? I want to know this purely out of academic interest and without any prejudice or without any intention of hurting any one's Religious sentiments.

The People from Tamil Nadu migrated to Sri Lanka for a better living and now they want to grab land from Sri Lanka. People from Tamil Nadu have left Tamil Nadu to different countries of the world for a better living. First they want to work and live in those countries and finally they say this is our land. Instead of adopting to the culture of the country where they live in Tamilians try to impose their culture in other countries. When we migrate we must adopt to the culture of the migrating country and leave with peace and harmony instead of destroying peace and fighting for separate land.
