Only mass movement will bring change in country: Hazare

Amritsar, Mar 31 (IANS): Launching his 'Janatantra Yatra' (tour for democracy) from the historic Jallianwala Bagh here in this Sikh holy city Sunday, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare said only a mass movement could bring about a change in India.

"I will continue this crusade (against corruption) as long as I have life in me," Hazare, 75, said addressing his supporters here.

Flanked by former Indian Army chief Gen. V.K. Singh, Hazare started his year-long, all-India tour from the city's historic Jallianwala Bagh.

People jostled with each other in the congested area near Jallianwala Bagh in the walled city to catch a glimpse of the anti-corruption activist.

The tour is part of Hazare's campaign for a stronger Lokpal bill and electoral reforms, among other demands.

The 'Janatantra Yatra' will move through Punjab for five days. Hazare, who arrived here Saturday, will address eight rallies in the state.

"The country is headed towards disaster. We want to bring about change," Hazare told supporters as he embarked on his tour.

Hazare and his supporters earlier offered prayers at Harmandar Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines. He also offered prayers at the Hindu shrine Durgiana Mandir here before starting his campaign from Jallianwala Bagh.

Hundreds of innocent and unarmed men, women and children were massacred at the Jallianwala Bagh April 13, 1919, by British forces led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer.

The victims had no escape route when they were fired upon, as the only narrow entrance to the park was blocked by armed troops.

Colonial-era records put the deaths at around 400, while leaders of the country's freedom movement claimed over 1,000 people had died.

After Punjab, Hazare will enter Haryana and then move on to Uttarakhand.

After a short break, the second leg of the tour will cover Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

The tour comes exactly two years after Hazare went on a hunger strike against corruption in New Delhi in April 2011, followed by a similar agitation in August that year which culminated in a hunger strike in Mumbai in December.

During the all-India tour, Hazare will also work for forming a nationwide organisation of individuals, social groups and NGOs fighting corruption at the grassroots level, his aides here said.

Mass movement is good idea. But those who have participated in mass movement, how good are they, when they ute their duties as a citizen of this Country, whether they serve in civil society or any other position.

I have personally observed, those who have participated in Jaya Prakash Narayan mass movement in 1973, once same people when they have been chosen to power, have become more corrupt, selfish, and amassed wealth disproportionate to their income.

Best solutions might be, in the school syllabus, from the primary level, the child should be taught the morale, and how to grow as a responsible citizen with service mentality to fellow citizens.

Anna, stop black mailing the present govt. You cannot control your core members and how can u advise the entire nation. I have already lost interest in your mass movement.

I am very sure people who really contributed to the society without expecting return will never complain Hazare by whom many have benefited.Nobody's perfect in the world. We must appreciate & support if someone is doing good for others rather trying to find negatives of them. By sitting in a comfort many r happy to make a negative comments, then why they r unhappy to put the positives? can we call them educated? can they be model for anyone?

Dear Anna, I think you are fighting for a lost battle. Looking at the history of our beautiful Country after independence, our own people never bothered about corruption at Government Offices. In fact our own people ready to bribe concerned Government Officials to get the work done without proper documentation available. But only worrying part is, genuine people will caught in between even if they are 100 percent right. Most of the people support your “Morcha or Dharna” whenever they have free time or holiday else, off course they can’t join your “Morcha” for long time. Few People followed you since they already retired from their services and now earning pensions. Unless we have branch everywhere to function against corrupt officials, this kind of agitation will not serve the purpose at National level. Dear Anna, we knew that you were successful by removing few Ministers in Maharashtra on corruption cases but Delhi is different. Though we have many tainted Ministers in UPA led Government but none of them is touchable for time being

CORRUPTION IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM AFFLICTING THIS COUNTRY. COMMUNAL, SOCIAL AND GENDER DISCRIMINATION ARE EQUALLY BIG EVILS AFFLICTING THIS COUNTRY. SO OUR FOCUS SHOULD BE ON ROOTING OUT BOTH CORRUPTION AND SOCIAL EVILS OF OUR COUNTRY. I WISH ANNA HAZARE WILL ALSO FOCUS ON FIGHTING AGAINST SOCIAL EVILS ALONGWITH HIS GREAT FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION. I WISH THAT GOD MAY BLESS HIM WITH SUCCESS IN THIS FIGHT AND I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT HIM AND SIMILAR PERSONALITIES.

Anna, just be carefull of CBI. Even if you have Rs 100 unpaid grocery bill or unacounted 10 rs you might have donated to a street begger would be enough for the Congress to leave their dogs behind men behind you.

Mass movement against COMMERCIAL corruption and COMMUNAL corruption could surely bring about a positive change in India.

Shri. Hazare, hatred minds can never bring positive change anywhere! They can bring disastrous change. Only compassionate minds can bring positive change.

Are you compassionate for all the people of India? Surely you will succeed in your endeavor!

Kiran Bedi has a website where people can log complaints, and there is a mechanism to get them registered & closed.

Can hazare create such a facility for people to give authentic corruption complaints, even now(after so much awareness and resistance across India). In a public forum, when corrupt people are dis-robed, from grass root level, then the people feel empowered and get encuraged to fight. People want to see results and it should happen at grassroot levels.

Yes, we don't like the scams of crores at the government level, but it is too big a thing to tackle for ordinary man. Let us start benefitting at our local levels, gradually this will move upwards, so much so, people won't vote them to power even.

Today, for many, Anna hazare movement is mere newspaper report, ordinary can't connect with it. If at local level we can do something, then it is worth it.
