M'lore: NMPT celebrates National Maritime Day

Mangalore, Apr 6: The New Mangalore Port Trust observed the 50th National Maritime Day Celebration (Golden Jubilee Year) on Friday April 5 in commemoration of the maiden voyage performed by the first Indian vessel “S S LOYALTY” owned by M/s Scindia Steam Navigation Company from Bombay to London on April 5, 1919.

The wreath laying ceremony on the Seamen’s Memorial was held at 9 am by the chairman, deputy chairman, HODs and port users to pay tributes to the seafarers who had laid down their lives out at sea.

Valedictory function was held at 4 pm in the auditorium. 

Walter D’Souza, chairman, FIEO, Southern Region was the chief guest. Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT presided over the function.  TSN Murthy, IRS, deputy chairman was the guest of honour. 

The local NMDC committee headed by Ivan A Monteiro, president along with committee members, the shipping fraternity, the port employees, port users and other invitees actively participated in the celebrations.
