Plane misses Bali runway, lands in sea

Denpasar (Indonesia), Apr 13 (AFP): A passenger jet operated by budget airline Lion Air -- which recently sealed blockbuster orders for new planes -- missed the runway at Bali airport today and landed in the sea but everybody on board survived.

The Boeing jet carrying more than 100 passengers missed the runway as it came in to land in good weather conditions at Denpasar airport on the Indonesian resort island, transport ministry official Herry Bhakti told AFP.

Bhakti initially said the plane overshot the runway, but later clarified his comments to say that it landed straight in the water.

Images of the incident site showed the plane partially submerged in the water with inflatable slides deployed from the front exits and a large crack in the fuselage towards the rear of the aircraft. Passengers in life jackets could be seen in the water.

"The plane was about to land when suddenly it fell into the sea. People on board panicked and began screaming," a passenger named Dewi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP, her voice still shaking.

She received light head injuries and was taken to Denpasar hospital where an AFP correspondent saw another nine people receiving treatment.

A Lion Air spokesman said the 737-800 was carrying 101 passengers and seven crew members. The passengers included 95 adults, five children, and one baby. Bhakti initially said it had been carrying more than 130 passengers.

He said the aircraft started operating in 2012 and was new.
The national transportation safety committee "will investigate the cause of the incident", he said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the incident or what the nationalities of the passengers were.

Lion Air, a little-known carrier launched 13 years ago with just one plane, has in recent times struck two of the world's largest aircraft orders in a staggering USD 46 billion bet on Indonesia's air transport boom.

France announced last month that Indonesia's fastest-growing airline had agreed to buy 234 medium-haul A320 jets worth USD 23.8 billion from European aerospace giant Airbus.

Well Mr. Fernandes, if an airline offers you a cheaper fare means it earns less eventhough it carries more people. That means it has less resources to spend on maintenance, crew training etc. I'm not questioning any of your choice of flight but I just want to say if someone is offering something damn cheap that means " daal mein kuch kaala hai". Flying an aircraft isn't like driving a car. One missing screw can bring down an entire aircraft. Aircraft maintenance isn't fixing the break downs, instead the spare parts must be replaced once their service life is over eventhough they are in good working condition. This criteria is always overlooked by the LCCs & also the AWDs of the FAA.

Well, Krishna Kanth, the air fare you mentioned itself speaks the fact. FYI, I have traveled in different airlines,Air India,Jet,Kingfisher, Indigo, Singapore, Malaysian, Qantas, Cathey, Korean, Thai, Lufthansa,Asiana, Delta, B.A., Air New Zealand, Tiger, Dragon, Silk, Garuda Indonesia, South African, Transat, Merpati Nusanthara etc. I very well know the difference between a FSC & a LCC. Flying cheap doesn't mean flying safe.Well I'm talking about safety & not food.Other carriers too don't serve food for free the charge is included in the fare. The seats in the LCC are so dense & uncomfortable. Less number of cabin crew means less number of professionals to guide you towards safety in case of emergency. No crew change even in international flights after each trip means more crew fatigue. High frequency take offs & landings give less time for preflight check ups. Incompetent crew hired on a little salary & lot more issues are there which people like you simply overlook & show a don't care attitude. Saving money is good but don't save it at the cost of your life.Cheap is not best. Cheap is always cheap.

This is expected from budget airlines since they cut corners in various aspects related to aviation safety just in order to ferry people like cattle herds from point A to point B

Dear sir, Krishna Kanth, I'm a frequent flier. I take up at an average 100-150 flights a year. These budget airlines have messed up everything in the aviation industry. The competition is so intense that they have to offer cheaper fares than their rivals, meaning they have to cut corners, wherever possible just to compensate the operating costs. Something has to be compromised & it's safety always. You can check out recent aviation accidents & incidents to find out the facts. More than 80% of them involve budget airlines.I'm too curious to know have you ever taken up a flight.

Jossey..you are right here. But the way you passed your first comment is really disgusting. What do you mean by saying Mangalore has an "OPTION" to land in sea??? Mishaps happen. Sometimes it is due to human error and sometimes unavoidable.
