One dead in Brazil stadium collapse

Sao Paulo, April 16 (IANS): A construction worker died after the collapse of a grandstand being built at Brazil's Arena Palestra football stadium.

Carlos de Jesus, 34, died instantly Monday when he was crushed by a concrete column at the stadium in Sao Paulo, TV Record reported.

Another worker, Crispiniano Santos, was taken to hospital with minor concussion and back injuries, reports Xinhua.

WTorre, the construction company responsible for the project, said it was conducting a full investigation into the incident.

Arena Palestra, which will be the new home of Brazilian club Palmeiras, is not a 2014 World Cup venue.

The incident occurred less than a day after two fans were shot dead before a test event for the Castelao World Cup stadium in the northeastern city of Fortaleza.
