Juventus close in on Serie A title

Rome, April 16 (IANS): Juventus have taken a firmer grip over their 29th Serie A title, beating Lazio 2-0, with Arturo Vidal scoring both goals.

Juventus moved 11 points clear of Napoli at the top of the table after Monday's victory, Xinhua reported.

Vidal converted a penalty in the eighth minute to open the scoring after his teammate Claudio Marchisio was brought down by Lorik Cana.

The Chile international, who last scored in November, struck again in the 28th minute and that gives Juventus a good chance of grabbing the title when they play hosts to Palermo on May 5.

"This win is a very, very important win which allows us to put another huge brick on the road to the title," said Juventus coach Antonio Conte.

"I have a really great affection for these lads, to whom I will always be very grateful.

"They have always followed me, allowing me to win the title last year and to arrive close to the second one this year. But we still need seven points and until we have something in our hands, we won't talk about it."

The defeat dashed Lazio's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. It is eight points behind AC Milan, who look good to take the last qualifying spot.

The results:

Monday: Lazio lost to Juventus 2-0.

Sunday: Palermo drew with Bologna 1-1; Chievo drew with Catania 0-0; Cagliari bt Inter Milan 2-0; Roma bt Torino 2-1; Genoa drew with Sampdoria 1-1; Parma lost to Udinese 3-0; AC Milan drew with Napoli 1-1.

Saturday: Pescara lost to Siena 3-2; Atalanta lost to Fiorentina 2-0
