Seven people hanged in Iran

Tehran, Apr 17 (IANS/AKI): Three convicted rapists and four armed robbers have been hanged in Iran's southern Fars province, the Mehr news agency reported.

Four of the hangings took place in public and three were carried out in Adel Abad prison in Shiraz.

Two more prisoners, convicted of armed robbery, were also due to be hanged in public, the news agency said. Mehr did not identify the convicts.

Rape, armed robbery, murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking are all capital crimes in Iran.

Human rights activists believe hundreds of people have been executed in Iran in recent months.

After China, Iran executes the highest number of people annually, according to anti-death penalty campaign group Amnesty International.
