Indian sentenced to 10 years in jail in UK for raping TV star

London, Apr 17 (PTI): A 25-year-old Indian student has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a British court for raping a TV star in her hotel room after a birthday party.

Soby John, a porter, used another worker's key card to let himself in before attacking the woman celebrity as she slept after a night of heavy drinking with her friends.

John, who admitted rape, will be deported to India after serving his sentence, British tabloid 'The Sun' reported today.

Judge Alistair McCreath of Southwark Crown Court said John, an Indian student studying in the UK, deliberately targeted his victim at the London hotel because she could not defend herself.

The judge said: "She now suffers massive anxiety, is frightened of staying in hotels and has huge trust issues with people. She is scared to go out on her own and no longer feels comfortable with men. She is frightened someone will hurt her."

McCreath said: "I have no doubt you raped her because she was so drunk so she could offer no physical resistance. This degrading act was made all the more degrading by the fact you took photos of her."

John, of Wembley in North London, initially told police the woman "made advances" to him which he rebuffed.

After he comes back somebody should tell him what
'Jhandaa OOncha Rahe Hamaraa' really means.....
Doesn't make a pleasant reading this.
The 'after effects'on the victim especially.

looks like lady tricked john. Even if she made so called 'advances', john should hv the control agreed. But how come she is not equally responsible for the advances she made, besides she is heavily drunk !!

Read the news properly, it says 'Soby John, a porter, used another worker's key card to let himself in before attacking the woman celebrity.' That shows it was a forced entry into the room.

Tricked? For what gain Cynthia madam? The victim is already a known figure (to attract cheap publicity)If it was for money (what a part time porter could offer her?) She was sleeping in the hotel room and not in the open place like a park or something. She may be heavily drunk but that is her problem as long as she is not causing any public disturbance. Moreover she is sleeping in the hotel room after getting drunk (best thing to do). John got himself in to the trap by using someone's identity to enter the hotel which itself is clear of his intent. No sympathy needed for him. Hail the quick justice system instead. Let us hope to have similar (speedy) justice system in India too.

I FULLY AGREE WITH THE COMMENTS OF MR.ROSHAN BRAGANZA. IT SEEMS TO BE LAW AUTHORITY ACCROSS GLOBE IN FEW COUNTRIES SEEM TO BE WOMAN DOMINANT OR SUBMISSIVE. LAW SHOULD INFACT LOOK EVERYONE EQUALLY WHETHER IT'S MAN OR WOMAN. IN THIS CASE WHY ONLY JOHN WAS PUNISHED??? WHY NOT WOMAN WHO WAS HIGHLY INTOXICATED??? MOREOVER, THIS STUDENT HAS REVEALED THE TRUTH THAT, SHE HAD MADE ADVANCES WITH HIM... WHAT DOES IT MEAN??? AND WHY HE NEED TO BE IMPRISONED FOR 10 YEARS??? IS HE PROFESSIONAL RAPIST TO GET TRAPPED UNDER THE CLUTCHES OF JUDGES FOR 10 YEARS IMPRISONMENT??? WOMAN IS ALSO EQUALLY A CULPRIT FOR MISLEADING A YOUNG STUDENT TO MOTIVATE HIS MINDSET TO GET RAPED... WHY BRITISH OR ANY COURTS ACCROSS GLOBE DO NOT TAKE CARE THE SAME IN RAPE CASES???? WHY A MAN ALWAYS A VICTIM...

Please read the article once again. If your views are to be accepted then there is serious flaw in the way the article has been written. John has used his co-worker's card to enter the hotel. This is one single (strong) point enough to get himself convicted and shows clearly that his motive is suspect. He himself has to be blamed. Think about it George, even when a person well known to you calls, will you opt to gain entry to her place the way John did?

The every possible argument in such cases always against men , he finds no defence. So called 'victim' was drunk , is it why he is been labelled 'rapist'?. Advances ? , what if this women rebuted her statement after a possible consented relationship. I feel sorry for this man and looks like victim of unfair women centric laws. Feminists are already jammed up in places like , wondering which r places men can get their solace and rights. Enough of women empowerment .

rape and Crime is rampant in Europe especially over weekends. Drinking and partying are leading to cheap human behaviour. Migrant from Africa, Middle east cause majority of the crime. This poor fellow must been excited by the white easy meat. Serves him right as unlike India, Justice system moves quickly and investigations are thorough.

OMG !!! If an Indian student would have got raped overseas there is a communal twist and such a big hue and cry of how we are treated abroad.

But when an Indian student rapes a drunk woman there is pin silence.

    Why these double standards??
