Probe launched into Dalit youth's killing in Haryana

Chandigarh, Apr 18 (IANS): Haryana Police are investigating the killing of a Dalit youth in a village of Bhiwani district, police officials said Thursday.

Jaipal's body was found by police Wednesday from a car. Two youths have been taken into custody following a complaint from Rajpal, the father of Jaipal.

The incident took place at Devsra village in Bhiwani district, 270 km from here.

There are allegations that the youth was tied to a tree and rammed with a vehicle repeatedly Tuesday night till he died.

Police officials said Jaipal's neck had strangulation marks. "The body was dumped in the car to make it look like an accident," a police official said.

The police investigators are looking into an incident of December 2012, when Jaipal was getting married and members of an upper caste objected to his going on an elephant for his wedding.

The incident had led to tension between the upper castes and Dalits in the area.

One of the youths taken into custody is from the upper caste while the second one is a Dalit.

Bhiwani district police chief Simardeep Singh said that the killing of the youth was being investigated.
