Thirty-three percent of world’s poorest live in India

New Delhi, Apr 19 (Reuters): India has 33 percent of the world’s poorest 1.2 billion people, even though the country’s poverty rate is half as high as it was three decades ago, according to a new World Bank report.

India reduced the number of its poor from 429 million in 1981 to 400 million in 2010, and the extreme poverty rate dropped from 60 percent of the population to 33 percent during the same period. Despite the good news, India accounts for a higher proportion of the world’s poor than it used to. In 1981, it was home to 22 percent of the world’s poorest people.

The World Bank report comes just days after it proposed a $12 billion to $20 billion plan to reduce poverty levels over four years in the Indian states of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Sixty percent of the financing would go to state government-backed projects, according to the Hindu Business Line newspaper.

The study that came out today showed a similar decline in the number of people living in poverty in recent years. People living below $1.25 (67 rupees) a day fell considerably from more than half the people in the developing world in 1981 to 21 percent in 2010, despite a 59 percent increase in world population during the same period.

Still, there are 1.2 billion people living in extreme deprivation, and the World Bank urged the international community to increase efforts to stop this within the next two decades.

China was the most successful country in helping improve its people’s economic condition. Its poverty rate fell to 12 percent of the population in 2010 from 84 percent in 1981.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region in the world where the number of poor has risen steadily, despite a decrease in poverty rate from 51 percent in 1981 to 48 percent in 2010, according to the report titled “The State of the Poor: Where are the Poor and Where are the Poorest?”

Thanks to the Dr. Ambedkar virachitha Constitution, thanks to the country's justice system, thanks for the great democratic political system, thanks to the Administrative service systems . All the systems designed & being kept in such a way so as to promote corruption to the core. All the systems designed to make rich the richer and the poor the poorer. Common man has only one right, that is voting that comes once in 5 years which is not worth even a penny!

Shocking statistics indeed! I believe there are quite a few million millionaires (the so called crorepathies - politicians, bureaucrats, mega-rich businessmen and industrialists and alike) are there in India whose wealth is stacked and sheltered in black money as cash or gold, and also in foreign Banks, and even if a time portion of this mega-wealth (say 10%) is distributed and shared amongst these poorest people, I am sure this percentage will come down quite a bit. The big question though, will these Mega rich people agree to sacrifice and share even a tiny bit of their fortune?

if only we poor people stop going behind movies and serials or soaps we would not be poor.we waste more time on movies and less on our daily activities.we poor are making only the richer more richer and we still remain the poor.our hard earned money goes behind cricket, movies, or booze.if we poor learned to educate our self and learn to live a standard life we wont be poor.very simple.

Alwyn Canada, pl. note that Jossey has used the word Bhikari ( Beggar) and not Bihaari (State). As it is whatever you have said is correct. In Western countries rich Industialists spend atleast 10% of their income for betterment of poorer section of the society. In India only Premji Ajim of Wipro spends 25% of his income for Charity and Bill Gates of USA spends 50% of his income for charity all over the world. But Ambaanis spend their money only to BUY the corrupt politicians.

Nothing changes untill we change ourself and focus on helping others. we sick of your negative thoughts pouring into this site. learn to live a good life and forget the hatred which will destroy you for sure. use your time wisely helping the poor. read a story of Mother blessed teresa which will inspire you to change rather talking bjp/congress/kjp etc.

Yes Shenava, this is true and also unfortunate for a poor country like India. M. Ambani has costliest House in the world. Besides, this house has 600 servants. Our Industrialists and Politicians want all other Indians to remain poor, remain less educated, and be the slavish servants of handful of rich people lifelong. Just to please God these rich people foolishly spend Crores of rupees for Puja thinking that God is also corrupt like them.

We always need to memorise Gandhiji's words: "We have enough for peoples need, but not enough for peoples greed" how true it is!
But sadly many people of this nation have discarded father of this nation Gandhiji and his teachings.
In sensitive and ever greedy politicians irrespective of party affiliations, SOME EXPLOITING Industrialists, and Underworld are responsible for this tragic situations.
Some Politicians even terrorise the organisations who help poor and needy.

22% in 1981, which was increased to 33% in thirty years great improvement in prosperity! The rich and the richerest are building upward, the poorest are adding the length and width of the slums vetically. The average politicians have accumulated in crores in a very short span of time, over 600% in less than ten years of their political career, rapid improvement in self-denial! The politician's domestic car "Ambassador" is a thing of the past, but custom-made German cars are waiting in line to carry these great disciples of Gandhiji. How many crores are being wasted by the politicians for travel around the world? 33% of the poorest people in the world are living in India???? The best economic gague
    to be greatly delighted!

Huge money in circulation. We have Rs. 10 lakhcrore of money in circulation which is more than 15% of our GDP. What is so much money doing in our economy ? This is nothing but to facilitate the black money economy. In US, UK, Canada there is a money circulation of only 3% of the GDP. Hence if the money circulation in our country is Rs.10 lakhcrore then our GDP should be approximately Rs. 330 lakhcrore instead of Rs. 60 lakhcrore. So where is the rest of the GDP ? The answer is black money and the location is Swiss Banks

Corruption eating national spending The government has made budgets worth Rs.200 lakhcrore in the past. This is a huge sum of money. But can we see anything ? Only 10%-15% of the money spent on the nation reaches the people, the rest is engulfed by corruption. Then why is the UPA government not doing anything against it ? Congress rulled & ruined our India most.
