Child rape case: Second accused held from Bihar

Patna, April 22 (IANS): The second accused in the five-year-old girl's rape case in Delhi has been arrested from Bihar's Lakhisarai district, police said Monday. A Bihar court has granted Pradeep's three-day transit remand to the Delhi Police.

Delhi Police with the help of state's special task force and district police arrested Pradeep Ram, between 20 and 25 years old from Badhaiya area, Bihar Director General of Police Abhayanand said in Patna.

"Pradeep was presented in the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Lakhisarai and the court granted a three-day transit remand (of Pradeep) to the Delhi Police," Lakhisarai Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mishra said.

Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) Ravinder Kumar said that in view of prevailing anger among the people, Pradeep was being taken to Patna under tight security, and from there he will be taken to Delhi.

Police sources said that the prime accused in the case, 22-year-old Manoj Kumar, from whose room in Delhi the girl was recovered days after she went missing April 15, had blamed Pradeep for the brutal attack on the girl.

"Manoj said he met Pradeep on a train. The two were casual labourers who would often meet for a drink," a police official told IANS in New Delhi.

Police said Manoj had admitted that on the day of the incident the two had been drinking, and struck up the idea of finding a girl. When they came out of their room, they saw the five-year-old at her games. Manoj said he lured the girl with chocolate, but blamed Pradeep for the rape.

"We will interrogate Pradeep to learn if what Manoj said is true," the police official said.

Manoj Kumar, the prime accused, was held from Bihar's Mujaffarpur district Saturday, where he was hiding at the home of his parents-in-law.

He was sent to judicial custody Sunday till May 4, following his interrogation by Delhi Police.

The minor victim is undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Annet, I understand your Frustration. Please read again - my question is for a situation created by the politically powerful for their personal gain. Not what the victims are going through !

Lydia, Mumbai is not rape free but we can’t tolerate a women getting raped in the Capital every 24 hours. If you observe the pattern of rapes in Delhi they have been committed mostly by migrants who come to this city, earn some money, satisfy their lust and disappear. I am sure the only solution is restricting this migration or having one policeman guarding every woman……

India is taking a heavy beating since some TV channels have started publishing only rape news of India.
Ours is a strange country where male dominated society has exploited women since ages. Rape can happen in any country, but now India is known for infant rapes and perverse brutality. Why ? Ours is a cultture where even temples depict sex of every nature explicitly, but in real world it is all a taboo even to discuss. Ours is a country where once upon a time the woman had to climb the funeral pyre when the husband died. How the society glorified it! Ours is a culture where the male is sex starved due to cultural issues, where privately people devour pornography and blue movies and on the outward behave religious. When will the people get honesty to admit we are a sick population and try to take a constructive step by honestly banning perversity in movies and ban pornography to begin with ? You cannot stop rapes when the entire population is sick.

Are you sure that raising salary of police will improve their efficiency? It is the deficiency in recruitment and training. Right people are not recruited due to corruption in the system and they are not trained adequately.

People who plead for men who commit rapes and say 'rapes' happen by victim's 'invitation' and blaming feminism are at least speechless at such heinous crimes. There is no explanation other than confidence in the uselessness of the law and its twisted ways.

I don't know what is left now.... Country itself is raped the over and over again by the ethos that we experience in our day-to-day life.

Beware! God, fed-up with all this nonsense, may destroy his creation, completely! He may not need Novah's Ark for ing 1 of kind, when nothing seems to be worthy.

    Jossy,

You may remember Raj Thackerey's uncle hated Kannadigas and wanted to drive them out of Mumbai. Does that make Kannadigas criminals ?

Despite keeping away UP/Biharis, is Mumbai rape-free ? Is Karnataka crime free ? Have we forgotten Sowjanya and Sowmya ?

Never believe politicians. They change their opinion anytime, according to changing situation.

Many comments on the earlier part of this news, highlighting the government's inability to curb the crime.

I want to recall here that the first accused has been involved in two rape cases before this episode and would have been committed even third had he not been apprehended for trespassing. He was sentenced to one month and seven days in Delhi for this offence. His earlier victims were his cousin (his uncle's daughter) and his present wife. Not known what happened in his cousin's case but his wife was made to marry him after compromise with community heads.

Now, I want all you commentators who are making it a political responsibility, to ponder over this and decide if you would allow such a maniac into your city. I want you all to answer if you can judge a man's habit/motive by looking at his face.

Please stop blaming the government for every criminal activity, he is not a son of any political leader.

Secondly, law making is 50-50 responsibility of both governments, ruling and opposition. Blaming one government for inability to be effective in this matter is totally ignorance about how your own country functions !

Well, the police have definitely proved inefficient because they attempted to hush-up the case by offering bribe to the victim's parents.

U r right Lydia.Government can't peep into hearts of an individual. But my point is why are they dragging the rape case. Why only in India petition ,cases moved HC and SC etc happening. When it is confirmed that such a person is rapist ,take an action against that person than adopting him n feeding him.Give an verdict within 3months i.e. NO LESS THAN STONE HIM TILL DEATH.Why govt become foster parents of such culprits. For instance see the Delhi gang rape case. They are still not given death penalty.Instead are given chance for plea. There are so many would b rapists who are watching the news and the moment they come to know govt is not taking stringent measures .They rape4, 5,6 years old innocent children.CANCEROUS CELL MULTIPLIES IF CHEMOTHERAPY IS NOT DONE ON NEED,SIMILARLY RAPE WILL INCREASE IF DEATH PENALTY NOT GIVEN.Its heartening to know that girls are dying due to rapes, its not due to poverty.Shocking!!!

    Shammi,

I have no dispute with what you say - a rapist should not be spared, must be stoned/hanged or whatever.

But, how much to you trust the law makers/keepers ? Why can't our politicians use the law and create a rape scene and manipulate the fast law ? Trick an opponent by some means and within a couple of days stone/hang him ?

Do you remember a budding lawyer in Mangalore who was wiped out with no trace ? Can't totally believe law-makers ! A criminal should be given time to accept his crime and/or prove that he is innocent.

What if me or you tricked to be in such a situation ? Don't we deserve or have a right to appeal ? That does not say that I have no sympathy towards victims. I am extremely hurt by the pathetic situation they are in.

Ms. Lydia I always read your message and always like the comments. But in this case, I have some doubt. Can you tell me why the police are so careless. Its becoz of govt. Atleast after the Gangrape, Govt would 've more strict and add some more security in Delhi. Why did they not increase their salary. Govt is eating so much money from us and cannot increase the salary for the police. Whatever you say, I believe that it is the fault of govt directly or indirectly.
