Japanese firm makes natural gas marine engine

Tokyo, Apr 23 (IANS/WAM): Japan's Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in cooperation with Mitsui OSK Lines has demonstrated running an electronically-controlled engine for marine use, burning natural gas.

ME-GI was able to switch seamlessly between burning fuel oil and natural gas and has 20 percent less carbon-dioxide emissions than diesel engines.

Mistui said the engine has the same reliability as diesel engines used for almost all ocean-going merchant ships in the world.

Mitsui plans to use the new engine on LNG tankers.
