Australia's population to reach 23 mn

Canberra, Apr 23 (IANS): Australia's population is expected to reach 23 million Tuesday night, according to the population clock of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

This population clock is based on the estimated resident population at Sep 30, 2012 and takes into account factors such as the country's birth rate, death rate and international migration, reported Xinhua.

It estimates that with a birth every 1 minute and 44 seconds, a new migrant arriving every 2 minutes and 19 seconds, and a death every 3 minutes and 32 seconds, the 23 million will be reached just after 10 p.m.

With births outnumbering deaths two to one and a 14 percent increase in migration, Australia's population is currently growing by more than 1,000 people per day.

ABS figures show that around 180,000 people move to Australia each year and if the current migration and birth rates do not change, Australia's population will be 35 million in 2056, and 44 million in 2101.
