Five soldiers killed in Rajasthan


Jaipur, Apr 26 (IANS): Five soldiers were killed and four others were seriously injured when the truck in which they were travelling overturned in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district Thursday, police said.

A senior police officer told IANS that the accident occurred near a village in the district's Ramgarh area, some 600 km from Jaipur.

"The truck belonged to the army and was carrying a large quantity of ammunition. Jawans of the Gorkha Regiment were travelling in the truck," said the officer.

He added that the truck lost control and overturned near Sonu village.

"Five of the jawans were killed while four others have sustained serious injuries," said the officer.

Defence spokesman Col. S.D. Goswami said that a court of enquiry has been ordered into the accident.

Those who were killed have been identified as Prem Kumar, Prem Bahadur, Jeet Kumar Leembu, Amrit Kumar and Mohan Kshetriya. All of them were in their mid-20s.
