Sarabjit Singh loses battle for life

Sarabjit was India's brave son: PM; don't blame us, says Sibal

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS): A "deeply saddened" Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday condoled the passing way of Sarabjit Singh and termed him a brave son of India.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Sarabjit Singh. He was a brave son of India who bore his tribulations with valiant fortitude," the prime minister said in a statement.

The prime minister demanded that "the criminals responsible for the barbaric and murderous attack on Sarabjit must be brought to justice".

He regretted that the Pakistan government had not heeded the pleas of the Indian government to take a humanitarian view in the case.

"It is particularly regrettable that the government of Pakistan did not heed the pleas of the government of India, Sarabjit's family and of civil society in India and Pakistan to take a humanitarian view of this case."

Manmohan Singh said the government would bring Sarabjit's body back home. "May his soul be granted the peace that he could not enjoy in life. Government will make the arrangements to bring his remains home and for his last rites to be conducted in consultation with his family. The nation shares their profound grief with them," he added.

Don't blame us for Sarabjit's death: Sibal

India did whatever it could to help Sarabjit Singh, but Pakistan "failed to ensure" his safety, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal said Thursday.

"It was the responsibility of Pakistan to ensure his (Sarabjit Singh's) safety in their jail and they have failed at it. We should not be blamed for it," Sibal told reporters here.

"Our ministries must have taken all the necessary steps and must have done whatever they could because we are always ready to go to any length to ensure the safety of our citizens," he added.

Sarabjit Singh, who was admitted to a Lahore hospital April 26 after being savagely attacked in jail, died early Thursday.

He suffered serious head injuries and was on ventilator support since then.

Sarabjit Singh was on a death row in Pakistan after being convicted by Pakistani courts for bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan that left 14 people dead. He spent over 20 years in jails in that country.

His family claims that he was innocent, and had crossed the international border inadvertently, in an inebriated state, and was arrested in Pakistan.

Earlier Report

Lahore/Islamabad, May 1 (PTI): Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died in a Lahore hospital today after being comatose for six days following a brutal assault by other inmates of a high-security jail, officials said.

"I received a call from the doctor on duty (at Jinnah Hospital) at 1 am (1:30 IST) informing me that Sarabjit is no more," Mahmood Shaukat, the head of a medical board that was supervising Sarabjit's treatment, told PTI.

Officials of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad said they had been informed by officials of Jinnah Hospital about Sarabjit's death.

Shaukat said authorities were yet to decide on conducting an autopsy of Sarabjit's body.
Asked whether the autopsy would be done after getting permission from the government, he said: "At the moment I have no idea."

No decision had been made about handing over the body to Sarabjit's kin or to Indian authorities, he said. "These matters will be worked out according to the directions from the government," he said.

Earlier in the day, official sources in Lahore had said Sarabjit had slipped into a "non-reversible" coma and this could lead to "brain death". His measurements on the Glasgow Coma Scale, which indicates the levels of consciousness and damage to a person's central nervous system, had dropped to a "critical level", the sources said.
Sarabjit's heart was beating "but without brain function" because of the extensive head injuries he sustained when he was assaulted on Friday, a source said.

Sarabjit was completely unresponsive and unable to breathe without ventilator support.
Sarabjit, 49, sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, when at least six prisoners attacked him in a barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday afternoon.
He was hit on the head with bricks and had been comatose in hospital since then.
Police have booked two death row prisoners – Amer Aftab and Mudassar – for the attack. They reportedly told investigators that they had attacked Sarabjit because he had allegedly carried out bomb attacks in Lahore.

No action has been taken so far against officials of the jail for failing to provide adequate security to Sarabjit. Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur, daughters Poonam and Swapandeep Kaur and sister Dalbir Kaur, who went to Lahore Tuesday to see him, have returned to India.

The Indian national was convicted of alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990 and spent about 22 years in Pakistani prisons. His mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former President Pervez Musharraf.

The previous Pakistan Peoples Party-led government put off Sarabjit's execution for an indefinite period in 2008. Sarabjit's family says he was the victim of mistaken identity and had inadvertently strayed across the border in an inebriated state.

Following the rapid deterioration in Sarabjit's condition, New Delhi had requested that he be immediately released so that he could be treated in India or a third country. Pakistan had said it was "positively considering" the request to repatriate Sarabjit.

First, Indians do not have any respect all over world because of high rate of corruption among politicians and frauds that is taking place from time to time. Politicians are busy in making bucks and they are bothered about amm admi. Brave Sarabjit spent all his life in prison and no politician was bothered about his release. In such cases, Americans are far better and we must learn patriotism from them. Now whatever our politicians are doing is just high dramas only.

Jude, Mangalore, Dubai: As you speak a lot, India does not have to talk about WAR at this stage. At least if it had resisted against Pak and tried for some action in the top level, there would have been chances to save atleast the life of Sarbjeet Singh.
Secondly, no need to compare KASAB's crime with that of Sarabjeet. The whole world has seen the vedio footage of Kasab who killed many people in Mumbai attack. Like wise, have you seen any such evidence that sarabjeet Singh done in terrorism? He was a common man from a poor family and not a TRAINED TERRORIST!!!!!!!
Hats off to your wisdom being an Indian.

Agreed that my knowledge is limited, but just go to the border and see if you can casually walk across and find yourself in Pakistan or vice versa. We as Indians may want to support a fellow Indian, but that does not mean we should behave like an ostriches.Instead of making a sweeping statement that high level action should have been taken, can you suggest what high level action that might be? How do you know that high level diplomatic initiatives were not taken by the government? These things are not done on TV channels as you might want to think. Today Pakistan has shamed itself in front of the world with this murder. It is too late for Sarabjeet and his family, but it might still help others who are languishing in their jails.

Mr. Jude, Agreed it is impossible to cross the Indo-Pak border today without risking one's life. But in the years 1990-91, when Sarabjit reached across the border, he was in an ebriated condition, there was no hi-tech security, no barbed wires or fortified fences. People used to go and come across easily. Those were the days when terrorism was newborn and being nurtured.

After all India is aiming to have permanent seat in UN Council..for which we need first of all to maintain 'peace' with our neighbours..!! If once same achieved.. we can diplomatically solve our most of our problems without waging any war..!!

It's sad fact..Pak Government removed Kidney/Heart..from the body. Earlier they killed one more Grima Singh..to retailate death of Kasab..!! It's really surprise at least they handover body of 'Sarbajeet'.. How one can live in 'cell' for long 23 years..!! It's only known to them only...situation faced..!! Sarabjit did not deserve to die this way and the Pakistan government is fully responsible for what happened to him and to Chamel Singh. The Pakistan government cannot escape responsibility on these two cold blooded and preplanned murders of Indian citizens in their custody.

At the same time I ask all those who are criticizing the government, as to what are your suggestions on the extreme steps that the government should take to teach Pakistan a lesson? Do you want the government to war on Pakistan and China? What would your reaction have been if Pakistan had asked for the release of terrorist Ajmal Kasab when our judicial system had given him a fair trial and found him guilty as he deserved. Similarly please remember that the judicial system in Pakistn had found Sarabjit guilty of terrorism. Therefore the only way to bring him back was through quiet diplomacy and not Jingoistic talk and speeches. These kind out outbursts by the BJP may satiate BJP's domestic audience, but will do nothing to sort out issues at the international level. What steps did the BJP take to bring back Sarabjit while they were in power? and if the BJP government was as strong as they boast why did they not succeed? It is very easy to talk while in the opposition and blame the government for everything. If you are watching news regularly and watching the experts on defense speak, they will give you the correct picture of the situation on the ground with China. Are we ready for a full blown conflict with China? The answer is a big no and it is not me but the defense experts who are saying this. Wars are fought by soldiers and not politicians. It is only the BJP politicians in opposition talking through their hats and are advocating war.Yes we can indulge in a tit for tat policy with Pakistan as some experts are suggesting, but are we prepared for more attacks and more deaths of our citizens as a consequence of such action? A responsible government has to think about these things.

RIP Sarabjit...Pakistan has avenged the hanging Kasab since they could not hang Sarabjit...from hereon how the Indian govt would go forward? Would we cut-off all bilateral relations with Pak, would we propose sanctions against them or would India attack them? Nothing, not-a-thing! Irrespective whether UPA in power or NDA, nothing could be done. Indian govt has more to lose than Pakistan. What is the shame to those (Pak) who are already running naked around? Whether war, sanctions or any other measures, India needs to think twice since in case of adverse results India will lose much as against Pakistan which has already reached the abysmal depths and has nothing to lose. All the govts, parties are aware of this. Sarabjit was in Pakistan prison for the last 22 years and in these 22 years, apart from UPA, NDA was in power, the Third Front, the National Front and the United Front too was in power for considerable amount of time. Why anything was not done then? In fact in those days Sarabjit was a just an undertrial and hence a lot could have been done. The bottom-line is very clear that all said and done, India's failure in dealing tough has much to do with its growth as global power in the last 20 years than mere lack of political will. The higher you rise, difficult it is to reach out to the one lying down below. One lying on the ground doesn't have to fear about falling down but one on the top surely needs to be careful about his steps.

The death of Sarabjit Singh confirms two things, the barbaric Pakistan government and the spineless Indian government headed by the most ineffective PM Manmohan Singh who is a puppet in the hands of Sonia Gandhi. Thats why he couldnt take any decision on either Sarabjit's situation or Chinese incursion. The present govt is leaving no stone unturned to come back to power in 2014 so that they can ultimately loot whatever is left of this country one last time as by then China and Pakistan would have taken care of our country and all these looters would have filled their coffers up to the brim and will settle down in foreign countries. so much for the cocern to the countrymen. india should wage a war on pakistan, close the borders, close any trading or cultural activites with pakiastan.let us see what action will govt take, the international human rights should take this case and find who is behind the murder of sarabjith, the govt should become aware that this kind of killings should not happen in the future.

Sarabjit Singh dies after week long neglect, Chinese incursion 19 kms, lowest ever productive hours in the history of Parliament, least number of bills passed during the tenure of UPA, India looted and raped repeatedly, ADB condemns grave social life in India . . . MODI should have been sitting at the helm.

India should stop all diplomatic relations with Pakistan. Even if India wants to have good relations with Pakistan, that rogue country is spreading terrrorism. Also, India should pressure other countries to ban Pakistani goods till it stops terrorism.

Finally pak killed him in this indirect way. Poor fellow died a death which he did not deserve. Now some people(...?...) in India have a new issue to target UPA lead government.
