Two foreigners held in Iran for 'illegal activities'

Tehran, May 5 (IANS/RIA Novosti): Two Azerbaijani nationals have been detained in Iran for illegal activities, the Iranian foreign ministry said.

"These individuals travelled to our country as tourists," a ministry source was quoted by Press TV as saying.

He did not elaborate on the charges, only adding that an investigation is underway.

The foreign ministry recently summoned Azerbaijan's ambassador to Tehran to lodge a protest against a forum of the separatist anti-Iran South Azerbaijan National Liberation Movement that was held in Azerbaijan's capital Baku March 30, Press TV said.

In May 2012, Iran arrested two Azerbaijani nationals, identified as Shahryar Hajizadeh and Farid Husseinov, on charges of espionage-related activities, specifically recruiting dissidents in Iran to promote separatism, it said.
