Irish national raped in Kolkata, one arrested

Kolkata, Jun 3 (IANS): A man has been arrested and remanded to police custody for allegedly raping a 21-year-old Irish woman, police said here Sunday.

"We arrested Sujoy Mitra following a complaint of rape by an Irish woman who lives in the city. Based on pictures in her mobile, we arrested Mitra from his residence here late Saturday night," an officer of Kalighat police station said.

According to police, the woman, associated with a Darjeeling-based NGO, had invited Mitra to an upscale hotel to celebrate her birthday Friday night.

After the party ended in the early hours Saturday, the woman dropped an inebriated Mitra to his house in Kalighat, where he allegedly raped her.

The victim filed a police complaint, following which Mitra was arrested.

"After accompanying Mitra to his house, the lady stayed with him for nearly two hours and even had breakfast. The allegations are totally false and motivated. My client is a teetotaller," said Mitra's counsel Dibyendu Bhattachrya.

Mitra was presented in a city court Sunday, which remanded him to police custody till June 5.

This does not make any sense. He was drunk, she went to his house to him. If he had the capacity of raping a woman, wouldn't he have raped her at the hotel itself ? Forget it, wouldn't he have returned home on his own ?

Common lady, you must have shown a wrong man's pictures. Look for the exact person who may have raped you and give a correct sequence of events if we are to believe you.
