Tirunelveli, Jan 5: As south India gets ready to tackle the terrorist threat, entry into internet browsing centres in Tamil Nadu will not be easy anymore.

Customers will have to show their ID cards to prove their identity. Their pictures will also be captured on web cameras.

The police have imposed these new rules following last month's Parliament bomb hoax which originated from a browsing centre in Tirunelvelli district.

"With webcams they will have to photograph and generate hard copies and have them along with the format we have prescribed," said Jayanth Murali, Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli.

But owners of the browsing centers have expressed their resentment to the new order.

"We don't know how this is going to work. Many customers hesitate to show their identity cards. Some even question why their addresses are being asked for," said S Kumar, Satyam iWay.

Rising cases

With cyber crimes getting more advanced, browsing centres have become more vulnerable for misuse of the internet. Over the years Tamil Nadu has witnessed a spurt in cyber crimes.

A few years ago Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had received two threatening emails from browsing centres.

The police feel such stringent measures are inevitable if pranksters and criminals are to be kept at bay.
