BJP likely to announce Modi as poll panel chief Sunday

Goa, Jun 9 (Agencies) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is finally set to make a big announcement on making Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its poll panel chief for the upcoming Assembly elections and the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

The announcement is expected a day after a clearly divided BJP could not take any decision on Saturday after strong resistance from party veteran L K Advani and some other senior leaders.

Meanwhile, reports said that Advani offered a compromise formula, suggesting that Modi be appointed as the convenor and not the chairman of the poll panel. However, BJP president Rajnath Singh is expected to declare Modi as the poll panel chief during his valedictory address to the BJP national executive in Goa.

Advani, who is reportedly ill, skipped the BJP National Executive meet for the first time in his entire political career, casting a shadow on Modi's prime ministerial aspirations. The party was at pains to explain his absence, with its spokespersons insisting that his "health is really bad".

However, reports suggest that the BJP is keen to make a big announcement about Modi on the third and the last day as the RSS has also given its go-ahead to it, but Advani and his camp, comprising leaders like Uma Bharti, Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha and Yogi Adityananth, are playing spoilsport and hurting party’s image.

“Currently, Narendra Modi is a member of BJP Parliamentary Board an no decision has been taken yet to make him the poll panel chief,” BJP national spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said.

During a press conference, she said, “If party wants to give Modi any other role, it will be announced to the media.”

While condemning the protests outside party patriarch LK Advani's house earlier today Sitharaman added that no BJP cadre was involved in the demonstration. Advani is staying away from BJP's National Executive meet in Goa citing health reasons.

Modi, who arrived in confidence at the three-day conclave and had a string of leaders clamouring to anoint him as the party's prime ministerial candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, now has until Sunday to swing the tide to his favour as BJP leaders continue to indicate towards a "big announcement" to be made by the end of the meet.

Party president Rajnath Singh, who has appeared to be on Modi's side, in his inaugural address to the meet said all would go home "happy and enthusiastic". This could be interpreted as an indication towards a major announcement, even as the BJP leaders remain tight lipped on record.

Insiders suggested that BJP president Rajnath Singh had offered Modi a compromise formula where the latter would be appointed as the convenor of the campaign committee for the general elections. Modi is, however, learnt to have rejected the offer for now.

Sources also say leaders of party's parliamentary board will have an informal meeting late Saturday to decide on the issue.

Party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman toed the party line, saying Advani was being briefed about all the developments.

"Rajnathji has talked to Advaniji yesterday and today. He is being briefed about all developments here," Sitharaman said.

Ismail has problems with candidatures of Modi, Advani, Sinha, Sing, Jaitley or Sushma etc etc. He has problems with all. He will be happy if Rahul Gandhi is chosen for PM post unanimously. He knows Rahul Gandhi can not compete and win.

As per ‘Feku’ Modi, milk (referring AMUL) used for making tea comes from Gujrat & his blind supporters nod their head like bakraas. They doesn’t know, AMUL company was established much earlier than Modi came to prominent in Gujrat.

Even though there is no involvement in success of most of the top companies there, he takes credit to fool people. This is Modi’s faking style.

Nobody is giving any clean chit. People who are guilty must face the full force of the law and be punished, whoever they may be. However, I am not aware of other individuals from the Congress apart from Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar against whom specific allegations have been made in the case of the Anti-Sikh riots of 1984 and believe me if either of these two persons were aspiring for any office in India they would be opposed by me as aggressively as Modi is being opposed for his PM aspirations.

Ismail, you seems to be politically illitrate. The future of the nation is decided by the people of this county not the political partis no matter whatsoever their Strategy is. Modi is the demand of the nation and nation comes first. Modi's promotion is not only inevitable but compensate the loss of senior leaders like Advani.

Why you people are hiding the Killing of innocent Gujarathi's by Modi. why you people are not talking at all about it. Even in karanataka also not raising the question of communal terrorism made by Sangha parivar etc. and not convincing the loss of BJP govt.

Communal riots are not an indicator of Communalism. It is how one deals with or reacts to communal riots that says whether one is communal or not. Communalism is an attitude/mindset or say even an ideology which dictates one's words, actions and agenda. Condoning of communal riot violence or looking the other way or encouraging it or making token arrests of the riot culprits or defending their actions or not expressing apologies for communal riot violence are also some very clear indicators of communal attitude/behaviour.
All this sounds to me like a description of the BJP party/Sangh Parivar groups.
However, the BJP for a while did have a moderate leader like Sri Atal Behari Vajpayee which made them acceptable but if a hardline element like Modi comes into focus it will mean disaster for India as a nation.

Dear Declan, for a moment let us agree for what you are professing. But why people are prejudicial politically?BJP or COngress or otherwise have so many short comings. But you people are so prejudicial that things are totally defined in a way that suits to your mindset/politics.You dont know that there are many people in this country who subcribe to your referred Sangh Parivar idelogies also.

The anti-Sikh riots are a stain on Congress leaders like Jagdish Tytler & Sajjan Kumar but they have no Prime Ministerial aspirations that is why they are not in focus here. However, there are apprehensions surrounding Modi because for his communal record his aspiring for or becoming PM will be a disaster for India's unity in my assessment.

It is a good decision if it materialized because the drama will end here and non BJP parties may concentrate on their strategy.By doing so,BJP may loose striking ability to Delhi throne in coming LS election. BJP stalwarts knows that Modi's hands are tainted with blood and that guilty feeling will hound through out BJP history. He failed to follow RAJADHARMA for 5.5 crore Gujarathi people and certainly question will arise how he could he manage 125 crore INDIANS.BJP is indeed in catch 22..

When bigger blood bath of anti Sikh riot of 1984 engineered by Conresswalas has never had guilty feeling for that party how retaliatory effect of an attack on Karsevaks in the rail body can haund the BJP and have guilty feelings? What this oppertunist logic? One can not define such incidents that suits his political likings.Truth can be twisted but can not be concealed.
