Prime Minister's air travel expenditure stands at Rs 642 crore

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI): A sum of over Rs 642 crore has been incurred on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's air travels abroad in the last nine years.

This information has been made public by the PMO as part of obligations under the mandatory proactive disclosure clause of the Right to Information Act.

The information reveals that Singh undertook 67 travels since 2004 when he took over as PM, of which bills of five have not been received. The bills received from the rest 62 visits show that Rs 642.45 crore was spent on air travel.

The Central Information Commission, in a recent order, had directed the Cabinet Secretariat to make public expenses incurred on the travel of ministers and VVIPs because of "large public interest" in the matter.

"We have been noticing a lot of public interest in the visit of such high dignitaries as the President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister of India. Quite often, one comes across RTI applications seeking similar information about these visits," Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Satyananda Mishra had said.

Last year, the information accessed by PTI had revealed that former President Pratibha Patil had spent Rs 223 crore on her visits abroad during her five years which triggered a debate on expenditure over VIP visits.

The list of the Singh's visits shows maximum expenditure of Rs 26.94 crore was incurred on his seven-day long visit to Mexico and Brazil in 2012 to attend G20 Summit and Rio 20 Summit respectively.

This was followed by Rs 22.70 crore spent on air travel to Washington DC, USA and Brazil in 2010 where he had gone to attend the Nuclear Security Summit, BRIC Summit and IBSA Summit.

It (Comments) shows the freedom of expression in our country that we count P.M's air travel "Abroad" expenses for last nine years!!!.

Citizens must see the man's "Integrity and Character" of our soft spoken (Not at all harsh) peace loving, having "International Reputation" as a Representative "Political-Leader of the Second Biggest Democracy in the world!!!".

For all the people who have been complaining about the expenses. Stop complaining about the different parties and do something. If u think they are not doing a good job stand up and do something about it. Do something in your community and stand up. If we cant do anything around us how can u expect them to do anything for us?

Please appreciate. It is only 642 in number. Air force ONE of USA is perhaps 100 times more than that for 4 years.India is second largest democratic country in the world after USA. Perhaps you have forgotten this fact.Indian PM is the most powerful VVIP who does not carry nuclear button along with his travel.

The corruptions within India is a huge loss and unimaginable big volume.

The Indian PM forign trip money is not a big value compared to any other western country will spend. Look at the benefits we have received from the world by PM foreign trips. As we are facing corruptions within India, atleast let us grow outside India. Braho..PM.

Why we as a nation are becoming 'peeping Toms', interested more in others' life than our own? What is this fuss all about? If all these visits are official, then why create an issue? Moreover, whenever PM or for that matter any of the VVIPs travel, a delegation including the journalists travels with them. So I think the given expences also include the airfare for this delegation. Nevertheless I just can't fathom why one should be interested in these things? Why one should bother how many times PM, President, Opposition leader, Congress President, BJP president travelled and how much they spent?

Check how many countries across the world reveal this data or people of how many countries of the world actually are interested in such useless things? Actually our nation is enjoying more freedom than it deserves. People, who do not know the meaning of freedom, do not also know how to use the freedom. Our personal and professional lives are rotten with corruption, hypocrisy and cynicism. Yet we are bothered about others. Come on! RTI isn't a tool for all these things. RTI must at first be used at the lowest wrung of democratic set up such a GPs, ZPs, TPs and Corporations. Find out how the elected representatives of these bodies fulfilling their duty. Catch hold of VAs and other officers at Revenue offices, taluk offices who do not move even a file without bribe. Check why the sub-registrar's office takes 8-12 months to complete our housing and property records but the same office completes the records of real estate agents, property dealers within a month. Check why there is such delay in granting RTCs, cast, income certificates and even disbursements of pensions, schemes. State or Central govt plans and grants schemes but implementation is left to these lower wrung of the set up. But unfortunately their failure in discharging the duty is hurting our nation more than anyone and anything else.

Dear Iftikhar Bhai and Safwan Bhai, absolutely no problem with PM’s travel expenses of 642 Crores money spent. But same people condemned the BJP Government in Karnataka when their MLAs’ including few Opposition Parties MLAs’ took foreign trip. Message is very clear, if you want to condemn the misdeeds or wrong move, then condemn all irrespective of Political Parties else support everyone without any biased. Just for example, yesterday we saw one news in our Coastal Area, where people struggle to cross the rising river to reach their homes due to lack of foot bridge where as we do not have hesitation to endorse the 642 Crores of Travel Expenses of our Honorable PM? You can recollect the promise given by our First President to his villagers just to give one visit so that their road network done prior to his village visit. Secondly we have to justify the expenses by asking one simple question “Is it worth that much?

If it is possible cut down all visits to outside countries as does not profit much to the nation except waste of tax payers money. Govt. /ministers leaders supposed to be Servants but become All time Rulers, kings and even dictators. First of all limit the visits and spending. Use all these expenses for the benefit of uplifting the people and nation. If other countries wants let them visit us as we are capable of.

Negative commenting is easy. Rs 642 crores in 9 years spent on PM's air travel is nothing. He is a responsible and the best economist India has today. Those air travels were inevitable as an PM of India. By criticizing his air travels you mean to say he should have traveled by sea to those destinations? In my opinion BJP should make Dinesh Poojari as their PM candidate instead of feku Modi.

Before making such nonsensical statements first get an RTI statement on the money spent by the Vajpayee government on foreign travels. Also, what about the money spent by your BJP government on pleasure trips to South America, China, Far East by calling them study tours, and that too when the state was reeling under drought.

Is this also a controversy? Our PM is very transparent by declaring all these statistics. He is the Prime Minister of world’s largest democracy in the world. Being a head of nation he needs to travel abroad along with his colleagues, guests and security team. By the by the calculated amount is spent during last 9 years is only a peanut for head of nation!!!!! Has anybody calculate how many cores of rupees have been wasted by way of boycotting parliament sessions on daily basis? Our PM is doing his duty. He is such a powerful PM who have signed 123 deals with USA. Because of his visits many big countries are partner with India for trade, commerce etc.....

President and PM as Air India one just like US Air force one. Obviously expenses will shoot up if someone has dedicated air flight. Media is cooking its Roti by not showing the bifurcated expenses. Let let'm show how much is personal expenses then it can be debated. Or else it is a cheap tactics to pull ones own leg.
