Punjab minister's security men die in freak accident

Chandigarh, Jun 13 (IANS): Two Punjab police personnel attached to the security team assigned to Punjab Education Minister S.S. Maluka were killed in a freak accident Thursday near Kundli barrier in Haryana's Sonipat district, police said.

The accident occurred about 35 km from New Delhi.

The two constables, Harbans Singh and Gurmit Singh, were in the pilot vehicle ahead of the minister's car. They fell out of the vehicle as the driver, whose visibility was limited because of heavy rain, suddenly applied the brakes on seeing a power cable lying on the Ambala-Delhi highway.

Police said the constables fell on the other side of the road, and were crushed by an SUV plying on that side of the road.

The two constables were rushed to the Sonipat civil hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Minister Maluka was on his way to New Delhi to attend a meeting when the accident took place Thursday morning.

The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examination.
