Britain's future king has Indian heritage, DNA proves

London, Jun 14 (PTI) : Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, will be first British king with proven Indian ancestry, DNA analysis has revealed.

The DNA analysis of saliva samples taken from the Duke of Cambridge's relatives have established a direct lineage between the 30-year-old prince and an Indian housekeeper on his mother Princess Diana's side.

It is his only non-European DNA and means he will become the first Head of the Commonwealth with a clear genetic link to its most populous nation - India.
William is now likely to be encouraged to make his debut mission to India soon after the birth of his baby next month.

Researchers have uncovered the details of his lineage via a doomed relationship of William's Indian great-great-great-great-great grandmother.

Eliza Kewark was housekeeper to Prince William's great grandfather Theodore Forbes (1788-1820), a Scottish merchant who worked for the East India Company in the port town of Surat in Gujarat.

Eliza's mtDNA was passed on by her daughters and granddaughters directly in an unbroken line to Princess Diana and then on to Prince William and Prince Harry.

Eliza is claimed to have been Armenian, possibly because her surname is rather like the Armenian name Kevork and letters from her to Forbes have been found which contain Armenian script.

This in turn suggests a degree of Armenian cultural heritage and the possibility that her father may have been of Armenian descent.

"But we believe that all the evidence we have gathered shows that her genetic heritage through her motherline is Indian," BritainsDNA, a DNA ancestry testing company, said in a release.

"Princes William and Harry carry Eliza Kewark's markers but will not pass this Indian mtDNA onto their children, as mtDNA is only passed from mother to child," it added.

Jim Wilson, a genetics expert at the University of Edinburgh and BritainsDNA who carried out the tests, said that Eliza's descendants had an incredibly rare type of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), inherited only from a mother.

It has so far been recorded in only 14 other people, 13 Indian and one Nepalese.

The revelation explains why the Scottish father of Eliza's children suddenly deserted her and sent their daughter, Katherine, to Britain at the age of six.

Researchers have discovered letters from Eliza to Forbes pleading for her to be allowed to see him.
When Forbes died on a ship back to Britain in 1820 his will referred to Eliza as his "housekeeper" and the mother of his "reputed natural daughter" Katherine.

"Knowing something about your DNA and its origins in prehistory definitely changes your sense of yourself, and one way that it does that is to make you feel part of a world community," said Alistair Moffat, the founder of BritainsDNA.

The researchers also used another type of genetic evidence, autosomal markers, scattered across the genomes of Princess Diana's two matrilineal cousins and compared them to a global database of samples.

"These inherited autosomal markers equate to about 20-50 million letters of DNA out of 6 billion in total. It is therefore very likely that Prince William has not only inherited a small proportion of Indian DNA from Eliza Kewark but his heirs will also carry it," the researchers concluded.

"I always assumed that I was part-Armenian so I am delighted that I also have an Indian background," said Mary Roach, Princess Diana's maternal aunt who was one of two relatives who provided the DNA samples.

All the martial race of North India have Foreign blood in them, that is why they have fairer skin and better physique. Greeks, Persians, Mongolians, Huns, Afgans - all came to India through north West frontier and it was quite common at that time for these foreign soldiers to ill-treat women of conquered area. So in our North western states there is more mixed blood especially among Upper Castes.
In South India, the natives of Kodagu, West-Coast, and Nilgiris are not Pure Dravidians. Foreigners, especially Arabians & Jews who came to West-Coast for Spice Trading stayed back in India. Chitpavan Brahmins of Maharashtra-Karnataka Coast have Pure Israeli DNA which is already proved (Pl see Wikipedia).
A Noted Kodava Writer & Editor of Mysore Mitra claims that Coorgis & Toda tribes of Nilgiris are of Greek Origin and quotes to towering personalities of Gen. Timmaiah and Field Marshal Cariappa.

    Absolutely right!
    No doubt about that.
In the same way, so many Christians also got converted to Hinduism through Hare Rama Hare Krishna mission, Many converted to Hinduism in Mauritius, Surinam, Ghana and various other places! This is natural phenomena, no one can change it.

    Mr. Valerian D'Souza,
A great majority of Hindus in Mauritius, Surinam, Fiji, Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies, etc. are Hindu migrants from present U.P. and Bihar who went there or were taken there to work in the sugar plantations and other farms in these countries. Please take note that the majority among these Hindus were not converted.

Yes John, I agree with you, I was replying to a point which stated that, Christians & Muslims in India have Hindu back ground.
I accept that fact. I also tried to explain similar cases, where some Christians also got converted to Hinduism through the efforts of Hare Rama Hare Krishna missions all over the world from Christian background.
I am aware all the Hindus there are not converts from Christianity but migrants from UP, Bihar etc.

The so called "white" colonials are looters. If one sees the history these people one time went out looting for their own gains. The Brit empire has committed worst atrocities around the world including portuguese, spanish, dutch and so on.
Even today under a different manner the so called "white nations" are looting other nations in terms of globalization and fee trade.

This news is a bit confusing. Eliza is an armenian working at Surat and was house maid ! Media report is not clear. Raj did some good and lot bad But what about our country folks ? What stopped them from invading Europe or may be America ? No they liked to stay at home and enjoy the cozy comforts or rice/ roti and dal/samabr. Today Indians are rushing to america, Europe Australia begging for their citizenship. Shame. Here a few are commenting about Indias glorious heritage and past. What a joke.

Dr Kiran VSA,during the Ottoman empire days, Armenians worked as mercenaries for the persians, turks and europeans.British hired a lot of Armenians as porters and ship crew around Bengal. So Eliza being a Armenian who had settled in India comes as no surprise.

Now as for your argument that "Indians were lazy because we did not other countries", well, ancient India spread her influence not through swords, but through culture and art. From modern day India to far away Vietnam and Laos, Indian scriptures, art, food and philosophy spread, and has remained to this day. What about the colonial blood bath ? Has any of that survived other than few people with colonial mentality who continue to favor servitude ?

Your last statement about "Indians begging for western citizenship" brings forth your confusion. Humans have been nomadic all their lives. Seeking a higher quality life through hardwork and sincerity is different than commiting genocides, looting nations and colonizing them forcefully. Good day to you, Sir, and have a nice weekend.

Greek king Alexander attacked India with two lakh soldiers. out of which 50,000 stayed back in Punjab and married local girls. At that time entire population of Punjab was just 3 lakhs. So almost all Punjabis today have Greek blood in them. So they may be having little better personality than other Indians. If you test the DNA of our Present Prime Minister surely he has Greek DNA.

Cynthia, your logic is convoluted. The British agenda in India was to occupy,de-industrialize ( there by creating a massive market for British products ), take over local trades, and finally turn the natives against each other so they keep fighting for the next 200 years. Kindly read Lawrence James' 'The making and unmaking of British Raj'. Although a biased book based on the colonial view, it throws light on the evil agenda of British, and how an assignment to India was considered as "get rich quick" ticket by its officers.

Don't be naive and fall into the well documented "colonial mentality". The preposterous argument that exploitation and genocides commited by the British as "philanthropy" because they built "english medium schools" ( why ? haven't the Japs, Germans, French or Swiss done better than England without English education ? ), built civil structure ( to make it easier to rule, and hence the 'District Collector' system that we continue to this day for some strange reason ), and railroads ( easier to carry grains, spices and textiles to ports. Hence the primary railroads during Raj connected warehouses to ports ).

We have a responsibility to teach our children the true history. Lets not make the mistake of believing "the white master"s words again.

    Leslie fernandes..
Today what we receive 'freedom' from Britain..the main reason itself is America. During World War..Germany/Japan and its allies conquered more than half of the world. At that time Britian asked help from America to stop Germany/Japan advancing towards Asean Countries. Moreover on that time Japan also attacked 'Pearl Harbour'. America agreed with Britain with a condition..to leave all colonized countries..asap. After which America used Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki...that's the end of world war..!! Britain already suffered a lot on that war..second reason to leave all colonized countries.. !! Otherwise upto now Britain ruled more than 72 countries..we didn't had Independance...!!

"Well wisher", yes, we are undoubtedly living in a much, much better India than what it was under the Brits. The reversing of Indian industrialization by the British during 19th and 20th centuries, the Macaulayian education experiments on us, and killing millions through engineered starvation during natural calamities ( read about the great faminies during 19th century in India, or even the more recent Bengal famine of 1942 ). The British have committed attrocities on India that will take centuries to heal. Nazis pale in comparision to the blood that Brits have on their hands. Shame on those who think we were better off back then.

If not we can learn what is happening in India even without the British. Only blaming the British won't help. What mechanism do we have in place that we won't end up doing exactly what we hate in the British?
