President Xi, Obama summit was 'very successful': China

Beijing, June 20 (IANS): The first summit between President Xi Jingping and his US counterpart Barack Obama held earlier this month proved very successful, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Wednesday.

During a telephonic conversation Wednesday with US Secretary of State John Kerry, the Chinese foreign minister also said that President Xi and Obama during the summit in California agreed to build a new model of major-power relations based on mutual respect, cooperation and all-win results, Xinhua reported.

The two leaders' meetings nailed down the strategic direction for the development of China-US relations and sent very positive signals to the whole world in the wake of a complicated and volatile international situation, Wang said.

Building a new model of major-power relations is a historic task, he said, and China is willing to work with the US to implement the important consensus reached between the two presidents and promote positive elements in the relationship to make cooperation the main factor in it.

Kerry, for his part, said that the Obama-Xi summit was full of achievements, that the US side appreciated the spirit of dialogue and cooperation shown by the heads of state of the two countries at the summit.

The US believes US-China cooperation is very important and holds significant influence on many global issues, Kerry said, adding that the two sides have much work to do and the US expects strengthening of cooperation with China.

The two officials also discussed positive signs emerging in the Korean Peninsula.
