Sanitation worker killed while cleaning manhole in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Jun 21 (IANS): A sanitation worker was killed and two others were injured while cleaning a manhole here Friday, police said.

The incident took place at Defence Colony in Karmanghat division of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) when the workers were busy cleaning the manhole.

Due to a sudden surge of water, a sanitation worker identified as Madhu drowned and two others got injured. They were rescued by other workers and admitted to a nearby private hospital.

Member of assembly from L.B. Nagar Sudheer Reddy and GHMC commissioner Krishna Babu visited the site of accident. They promised adequate compensation for the families of the victim and the injured.

Last month, a sanitation worker was killed after he accidentally fell into a manhole at Khanmet in Madhapur. An auto-rickshaw driver, who tried to save him, was also killed.

The civic body has come under criticism for failing to take steps for the safety of its workers.
