13,000 stranded in Uttarakhand, rains hit air evacuation

Dehradun, Jun 25 (IANS): The army and security forces battled renewed rains Monday to evacuate many of the 13,000 people still stranded in the hills of Uttarakhand where devastating floods have killed hundreds.

With the rains hitting much of the helicopter operations, soldiers took to rescuing the stranded men, women and children by foot in a coordinated operation involving the state and central authorities.

Fresh landslides occurred on the key road linking Rishikesh and Rudraprayag, hitting rescue efforts. But the route ahead to Joshimath was open.

Officials said some 1,400 people awaited evacuation at Harsil, 50 at Dharali and 60 at Jhala in Uttarkashi and another 5,000 at Badrinath, near the worst-hit area.

A massive cloudburst near the revered Kedarnath shrine and the humongous floods that followed ravaged the hills of Uttarakhand over 10 days ago, causing a terrible calamity.

With vast stretches of mountain roads cut off, thousands of locals as well as pilgrims got stranded in various hills.

Monday's inclement weather led to the abortion of many sorties of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The army carried on rescue operations on the route from Badrinath to Joshimath and from Harsil to Uttarkashi.

In Badrinath, 281 people were moved by land late Sunday after the construction of a Burma bridge across the swollen Alaknanda. The army set up a heli bridge at Lam Bagar in addition to a foot bridge.

Two army and three civil helicopters ferried people from Badrinath. Eight hundred were moved towards Joshimath, both by air and on foot.

"Our aviators challenged the weather in the Badrinath valley to transport people," an officer from the army's Central Command told IANS.

In Uttarkashi, MI-17 helicopters made 16 sorties to take out 402 people from Harsil. Another 683 people reached Uttarkashi by foot.

Knowing that food is in short supply, the army has stocked food, water and medicines at Sukhi and Gagnani. Food was distributed at Govindghat and Joshimath.

Most big sized army helicopters were grounded for most part of Monday.

In the Kedarnath area, special troops from the mountaineering unit continued to look for survivors between Jungle Chatti and Rama Bara areas.

More rains have been forecast in the coming days. On Monday, rains battered many areas including Dehradun, Chamoli and Paudi where relief operations have been halted.

A cloudburst in Malan village in Paudi has devastated many houses though no casualties have been reported.

Besides the army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are also evacuating the stranded.

The government says 557 bodies have been found. Some officials and rescuers have said the fatalities may run into hundreds, if not thousands.

The rains have cut off communication to Tilwada and Gaurikund, where more than 500 people are stuck. Efforts to evacuate them were aborted due to heavy rains.

Rains are also lashing Guptkashi, Harsil and Badrinath - places where thousands are still stranded. Water levels have again risen in the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers.

In New Delhi, aid agency Save the Children said thousands of children and women stuck in Uttarakhand needed immediate medical attention and food.

Help is pouring into Uttarakhand from all over the country.

In New Delhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi flagged off trucks carrying food, medicines, clothes and blankets.

In Himachal Pradesh' Dharamsala, hundreds of Tibetan exiles offered prayers for those who died in that state and Uttarakhand.

feku Modi is the first person to reach Uttarakand to help stranded people ???

He visited there to help or to pick votes from debris of Uttarakand ???

Did you know, he was only interested in rescuing Gujratis? because they are his vote bank. Pls stop doing politics on dead bodies.

Also this feku, instead of assuring development of (re-constructing) flood affected roads, buildings, hospitals, he d Gujarat Govt is ready to re-build affected Kedarnath Temple !!!
It clearly shows his concern over human life. He is only targetting religious places to grab Hindu votes.

The Army is doing excellent job inspite of very adverse conditions and no help from Locals.
But see the local people. In Kedarnath pilgrims were not only looted by the locals, but one lady and her daughter were raped and also brutally murdered in that Holiest of Holy place. They sold water for Rs.300 a bottle, Chapati Rs.200 each, for taking shelter from rain under any roof they charged Rs.400/- per head
All those local Culprits were born and brought up in that holy place, and daily they take bath in Holy rivers, and worship daily in that Holy Kedarnath Temple. Even then they behaved like monsters, which proves that Indians have forgotten Humanity. Besides Holy places & holy rivers cannot change the basic character of the selfish people any where in India.

    Hello Mr. Nayak
    Greetings to you.
I really feel pity for you dear…how much hatred you have for congress. Why dear? I am not taking here any ruling parties side. I am just talking generally. By condemning others, what you will get out of it? There is a holy wording which says like this: YOU CAN CLEAR THE DUST FROM OTHER PERSONS EYE ONLY WHEN YOU CLEAR YOUR DUST FROM YOUR OWN EYE. Nobody is perfect in the whole world…just by condemning others…you are showing your weakness here…which will lead to your own disaster. Try to ignore politics and just think positively. No matter who rules the county…things will never change. What was happening before…will happen in the future too. Either it’s a BJP leading country or CONGI!!

Just a question dear! you always comment negatively what so ever the incident, whether it’s a RAPE, MURDER, Natural calamity, Kidnap, accident and so on and on the list will never end. Have you ever spoken or commented related to the subject? No…never…you always spoke just about CONGI. We don’t know what CONGI did for you. If it offended that much…for which you cannot stop condemning it!!! then we also cannot help you brother. GOD says…if you forgive others…your sins are forgiven. So it’s a humble request SAVE YOUR SOUL. HELP YOUR OWNSELF to preserve that beautiful soul. Do not allow the dust to come and store in it.

Again…even I am nobody to correct you….yet…I felt sorry for…please brother…stop…and concentrate in to your better future. If you are married…focus your attention towards your own family….rather than wasting or losing your temper on this foolish political parties…who are nobody for anybody. They live their life for themselves.

My heart is breaking looking at the victims who lost their life and for those who lost their future due to this natural calamity…but again…at the end…above all of this…GOD is watching every bit of us…and HE knows what to do and when to do, and whom to do.

    HAVE GREAT LIFE DUDE:)

Total failure of italian led UPA govt.

UPA suffers from multi organ defects.

Hindu pilgrimages are stranded since 10 days and UPA leaders are enjoying in abroad.

Why weather deapartment of UPA failed in giving warnings to pilgrimage ?

Why UPA did not act immediately on cloud burst.

Whole UPA team is AFRAID AND behind SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIDJI .

UPA SHOULD USE ITS POWER AND STRENGTH IN BUILDING NATION, HELPING POOR INSTEAD OF BLAMING SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI.

SINCE SHRIMAN NARENDRA MODIJI TOOK LEADERSHIP OF BJP , UPA LEADERS WERE SHAKEN AND ADMITTED THAT SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI IS A BIG CHALLENGE FOR UPA.

SHRIMAAN NARENDRA MODIJI IS THE FIRST PERSON TO REACH UTTARKAND TO HELP STRANDED PEOPLE BUT JEALOUS UPA DID NOT RESPONSE FOR HIS DEMAND OF HELICOPTERS TO EVACUVATE HINDU PILGRIMS.
