Kundapur: Man washed away while crossing river

Kundapur, Jun 25: A man who was crossing a river on foot drowned after he was caught in the currents. The incident occured near Maranakatte temple under Chittoor gram panchayat limits here on Monday June 24.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Poojary (38), a resident of Maranakatte. He was on the way home from the market when the incident took place.
It is said that at around 1.50 pm, Ramesh, while on the way home, decided to cross the Sowparnika river on foot to visit the nearby temple. He did not realize that the water was deep, and when he reached half way, he was caught in the currents and washed away. Sources said that he was in an inebriated state.
As soon the news spread, the local swimmers rushed to the spot and began a search for Ramesh. However, their efforts went in vain.
On Tuesday June 25, a team led by Kundapur sub-inspector Bharat and fire brigade arrived at the spot and launched a search operation. So far the body has not been found.
Local divers Shekar Naikambli, Nagaraj Poojary, Manjunath Poojary, brother Beliya Poojary and others searched for the body.
A case has been registered in Kollur police station.
Gram panchayat president Surendra Shetty, Dr Atul Kumar Shetty, Vandaballi Jayaram Shetty and others visited Ramesh's family to console them.
