Taj third among leading landmarks

New York, Jul 1 (PTI): Travellers from across the globe have ranked the Taj Mahal among the top three landmarks in the world, a leading travel website has announced.

According to the website, the Taj Mahal was ranked third in the list of top 25 landmarks.

The top two places were taken by Machu Picchu in Peru and Angkor Wat in Cambodia respectively.

“The winners of Travelers’ Choice Attractions awards were determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews of attractions,” said the website. The Taj Mahal, listed among the new seven wonders of the world, is renowned the world over for its architecture and aesthetic beauty.

It shares the latest honour alongside Petra World Heritage Site in Jordan and Bayon Temple in Cambodia, which are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the list of 25 top landmarks in the world.

    I agree that the Taj Mahal is a beauty and wonder. But when one decides to visit the Taj he / she is greeted with the stench of urine for almost a kilometer. I do not understand as to why the ASI does not construct urinals for the gents and ladies. Adding to the human urine, it is the urine of the horses which draw carts as the 1 km is marked as pollution free zone. Something needs to be done.

    The only landmarks for which India is remembered today are either built by rules of Persian origin or British.

    Post Independence we have not added a single landmark to this list.

    AA)It's just a question of time Before the Taj will not even figure in the Top 10 Landmarks ! The Taj Mahal is really scheduled to collapse within five years unless urgent action is taken to shore up its foundations, campaigners have already warned the authorities. The 358 yr old mausoleum is India’s most famous tourist attraction, drawing nearly five million visitors yearly to Agra. The river Yamuna most crucial to its survival is being blighted by pollution, industry ,tourists and deforestation.

    BB)Is the ASI and Forest Department & MOEFF listening ? The latest GPS system is so cheap that every R.F.O can carry it and accurately see the Forest Encroachments . The E-System with the Forestry Dept is perfect .
    The All India Problem is that the C.M. of the States controls the Forest Ministry and the IFS Babus have NIL say in official matters. Many more Uttarakhand Disasters are just waiting to happen in several States in the coming decade .

    CC)The Next tragedy waiting to happen will be the Western Ghats where the politicians ( Centre & State) have outright rejected the World Heritage Tag Conferred by UNESCO. The Tag will come in the way of the Timber which have been already sold to West. It will also stop the mushrooming of the Home Stays which have already caused great damage to the Forests and polluted the entire region.

    DD) The solutions are all available to the Deaf & Dumb Ministry of Forests & MOEFF and there is a urgent need to Protect the Coffee Farmers and have a PES ( Payment for Ecosystem) in place.

    EE)Similarly to save Agriculture in our Karnataka State & the Country from Land Sharks even the Paddy farmers (Already diminishing sharply) should be paid for Protecting the Ecosystem as it has been recorded by experts that Paddy(Rice) encourages rarest Flora & Fauna to flourish.
